With just fifty days until the first ball is bowled, Proteas legend AB de Villiers' enthusiasm for the Betway SA20 Season 3 opener between double champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape and MI Cape Town at St George's Park in Gqeberha on January 9 is intensifying.
For the second consecutive year, the first game will take place at St George's, and De Villiers, who has good memories of the nation's oldest international stadium, believes there is no better setting to begin an amazing month of cricket.
"I think the atmosphere of St. George's Park is the nicest of all the grounds. Indeed, they were just behind me when I was playing there," De Villiers remarked.
Nothing compares to playing in St. George's Park. There is usually music playing in the background when the band is there. You nearly seem to be wearing earbuds. playing cricket and dancing to some music.
Under the dynamic leadership of coach Adrian Birrell and captain Aiden Markram, the local team, Sunrisers Eastern Cape, has been the most impressive squad over the last two seasons, winning back-to-back titles.
De Villiers, who spent many years playing for the Proteas Men's team under Birrell, believes the Eastern Cape farmer's amazing team culture and spirit are what give them an advantage over the opposition.
"The Sunrisers Eastern Cape have won both seasons and have had tremendous success in SA20. It is an amazing accomplishment on their part. "They will do everything in their power to win three straight," De Villiers stated.
"I believe that their capacity to play as a team is what makes them strong. Their ability to hunt as a pack is what Adrian Birrell has accomplished in the arrangement over there.
Aiden Markram, the captain, is cool and collected. You also get the impression that anyone can contribute at any time.
"A real legend is Adi Birrell. He adds a great deal of poise and serenity. He is a humble farmer from the Eastern Cape who is a local legend. What is notable is his humility. He never belittles others. He always considers the fundamentals of the game to be the most crucial aspect.
However, MI Cape Town has added England Test captain and twice white-ball World Cup champion Ben Stokes to their already potent side for Season 3, so De Villiers is anticipating an exciting opening match.
"MI Cape Town is a team full with superstars. They have been for the last two seasons, and Ben Stokes' arrival only improves that team, De Villiers stated.
However, it also demonstrates that championships are not always won by the best teams. However, given that lineup's apparent strength, I do anticipate a better showing.
De Villiers, who spent the previous two seasons as a member of the Betway SA20 commentary team, anticipates another exciting month of cricket action and amazing entertainment.
"Betway SA20 Season 3 is 50 days away," he declared.
"As everyone is aware, the first two seasons were incredibly exciting and hyped. Big audiences and everyone showing up to support Betway SA20 Season 3 are what I am most excited about. I'm inviting everyone to join us and have a great time.
