Afghanistan U19 Future Stars Seal Series 2-1 Over Nepal Despite DLS Defeat in Final YODI
Afghanistan's next generation of cricketers, the Afghanistan U19 Future Stars, concluded a compelling Youth ODI series in Kathmandu with a 2-1 series victory against Nepal U19. While the hosts snatched a consolation win in the final match via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method, the Afghan boys had already sealed the series with back-to-back wins in the first two games a dominant performance in the opener and a thrilling last-over escape in the second.
Played at the Mulpani Cricket Ground, the three-match series offered a great stage for both teams to test their mettle ahead of bigger tournaments. And for Afghanistan U19, it wasn’t just about the result it was about cohesion, consistency, and setting the tone for the upcoming ICC Men’s U19 World Cup Asia Qualifiers.
A series of contrasts: domination, drama, and a damp ending
The series started with Afghanistan U19 flexing their muscle. In the 1st YODI, they posted a daunting total on the board thanks to standout performances from Faisal Shinozada and Khalid Ahmadzai, and went on to win by a whopping 130 runs. Their batting looked fluent, their bowling tight, and the energy in the field reflected a side brimming with confidence and purpose.
If the opener was a display of dominance, the 2nd YODI was quite the opposite. It had fans on the edge of their seats as Nepal nearly chased down a competitive total. Afghanistan’s bowlers held their nerve, clinching a 1-run win in the final over. Captain Mahboob Khan stood tall once again a figure of calm amid chaos as he contributed both with the bat and the ball.
Heading into the final game, Afghanistan had already secured the series. But Nepal U19 came out with intent, looking to salvage pride and momentum. Rain interrupted the proceedings, and with conditions deteriorating, the game was decided via the DLS method. Nepal, ahead of the par score when the rain stopped play, were declared winners, handing Afghanistan their only defeat of the tour.
Mahboob Khan and the rising stars of Afghanistan U19 cricket
While the series victory reflects a team effort, a few names emerged with consistent brilliance. Mahboob Khan, leading from the front, was a central figure throughout the campaign. His sharp tactical decisions, smart field placements, and critical contributions with both bat and ball showcased the maturity of a player destined for higher honors.
Faisal Shinozada impressed with the bat, especially in the first match, where he fell just short of a century. His strokeplay was crisp and calculated, and his ability to pace the innings anchored Afghanistan to big totals. Khalid Ahmadzai, too, made vital contributions, proving himself a reliable top-order batter and an agile fielder.
But perhaps the biggest takeaway was team depth. Afghanistan rotated their squad across the three matches without compromising on performance. It’s clear that they are not just a team of 11 but a pool of 15–16 talented players, all of whom seem to understand their roles well. This bodes well as they prepare for stiffer challenges in the continental qualifiers.
Eyes on the next prize: ICC U19 Asia Qualifiers
With the YODI series wrapped up, attention now turns to the more significant task ahead the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup Asia Qualifiers, beginning April 13, 2025, again in Kathmandu. This event is the gateway to the 2026 ICC U19 World Cup, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. Only the top team will earn qualification, making every match a must-win.
Afghanistan are placed in a group that includes Oman, UAE, and Hong Kong, among others. Given their history having reached the semifinals in the 2022 U19 World Cup and the quarterfinals in 2024 Afghanistan are entering as one of the favorites. But past performance won’t mean much unless they can adapt to local conditions and handle pressure over an extended tournament.
Their opener against Oman U19 on April 13 at the Upper Mulpani Cricket Ground will be crucial. It will set the tone for their campaign and test how well they can bounce back after a weather-affected defeat. One expects Mahboob Khan and his unit to regroup quickly and refocus on the bigger goal global qualification.
Development beyond results: why this series matters
More than just a series win, the 2-1 result in Nepal is a step forward in Afghanistan’s long-term cricket roadmap. It shows that the Afghanistan Cricket Board’s youth structure is not only unearthing talent but also nurturing it through regular international exposure. These matches are critical in developing temperament, learning to deal with pressure, and understanding the dynamics of international cricket.
Playing in Nepal also offered the Afghan squad an opportunity to experience subcontinental conditions outside of home turf valuable preparation for upcoming tournaments in Asia and beyond. The slow, spin-friendly tracks, variable bounce, and high-altitude atmosphere were challenges the young team embraced, especially the bowlers, who consistently adapted their lines and lengths match after match.
Beyond technical growth, the series allowed the players to develop camaraderie and trust the intangible but essential ingredients of any successful cricket team.
