In a significant development for the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced a match fee for cricketers participating in the tournament. Announced on Saturday by BCCI secretary Jay Shah, the move aims to reward players for consistency and exceptional performances. Alongside their lucrative contracts, cricketers will now earn an additional INR 7.5 lakhs for each game they play in the IPL.
Jay Shah took to social media to unveil this landmark decision, stating, "In a historic move to celebrate consistency and champion outstanding performances in the #IPL, we are thrilled to introduce a match fee of INR 7.5 lakhs per game for our cricketers! A cricketer playing all league matches in a season will get Rs 1.05 crore in addition to his contracted amount. Each franchise will allocate INR 12.60 crore as match fees for the season! This is a new era for the #IPL and our players!"
This announcement implies that a player participating in all league matches of the IPL season will stand to earn INR 1.05 crore, in addition to their existing IPL contract. With 10 teams competing, each franchise will set aside INR 12.60 crore to meet the expenses related to the match fee.
Mega Auction: Retention and Purse Updates Awaited
As the excitement builds for the upcoming mega auction, expected to be held in the second week of November, some key details are yet to be finalized. According to reports from ESPNcricinfo, each of the 10 franchises will be allowed to retain five players, with the option to use one Right-to-Match (RTM) card. This decision is expected to be finalized ahead of the BCCI’s 93rd Annual General Meeting, scheduled for September 29, 2024.
However, the retention rules regarding the number of Indian and overseas players are still unclear. It is yet to be confirmed whether teams will face restrictions on how many Indian or foreign players can be included in the retained lot, as well as the retention slabs.
The overall salary cap for the teams is also likely to see a significant increase. The current purse for teams is pegged at INR 90 crore, but the report suggests that this could rise to INR 115-120 crore for the next auction. The exact figure is yet to be confirmed but will likely hover around these numbers, providing franchises with more financial flexibility as they strategize for the 2025 season.
Implications for IPL Players and Franchises
This decision to introduce a match fee adds another layer of financial incentive for players, which is expected to further enhance competition and player performances in the IPL. The match fee of INR 7.5 lakhs per game is a significant sum, making every game crucial for players looking to maximize their earnings.
Franchises will now need to factor in the match fee allocation while planning their squad budgets, as this will be in addition to the regular contracts and salaries that players negotiate during the auction. With an overall increased purse and changes in retention policies, the upcoming mega auction is poised to be one of the most exciting in IPL history.
As the cricket world eagerly awaits the BCCI’s final decisions on retention rules and auction dates, the new match fee system has set the tone for what promises to be a thrilling 2025 IPL season, both on and off the field.
