Following Joe Root's resignation earlier this month, England has named Ben Stokes as their new Test captain. With England having only won one of its last 17 Test matches, the all-rounder took over for Joe Root, who stepped down two weeks ago.

Stokes has recently returned to the team following a mental-health break. Rob Key, the former England batsman who was recently appointed as managing director of men's cricket in England, is making his first major choice. Ben Stokes has made it clear that he wants Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad to return.

He has played 79 Test matches for England after making his Test debut in December 2013. In February 2017, he was named vice-captain, and in the summer of 2020, he filled in for Root while he was away for the birth of his second child.

The Durham allrounder Ben Stokes has scored 5061 Test runs at an average of 35.89, and claimed 174 wickets with the ball.

The ECB Interim Chair and Chief Executive Officer Tom Harrison confirmed Stokes' nomination on Tuesday evening, after the proposal of England Men's Cricket Managing Director Rob Key. Stokes will become the 81st captain of the England Men's Test squad.
