Bishops Diocesan College Crowned Inaugural Schools SA20 Boys’ Champions with Crushing Victory
Bishops Diocesan College etched their name in history by becoming the first-ever Schools SA20 boys’ champions with a commanding 99-run victory over St David’s Marist Inanda at Tuks Oval. In a final that showcased the best of South African schoolboy cricket, Bishops delivered a clinical performance with both bat and ball, ensuring their dominance in the tournament.
Bishops Set a Challenging Total
Winning the toss and electing to field, St David’s captain Samrat Basu hoped his bowling unit could contain Bishops’ strong batting lineup. However, the Cape Town side got off to a solid start, with SA U19 star Adnaan Lagadien and Samuel Stavely-Alexander opening the innings. The pair rotated the strike well, ensuring early momentum before St David’s found a breakthrough, dismissing Stavely-Alexander for 15.
Lagadien, the tournament’s top scorer, looked set for another impactful innings but was dismissed for 22, falling to a sharp catch by wicketkeeper Kamogelo Phiri off Kyle Butler’s bowling. Bishops skipper James Robb-Quinlan kept the scoreboard ticking with an attacking 26 off 23 balls, but his stay at the crease was cut short when Phiri produced a quick stumping off Hayden Campbell’s bowling.
At 75/3 in the 11th over, the match was finely balanced. St David’s bowlers kept chipping away, with Campbell striking twice more, dismissing Thaafier Japhta (21) and Waco Bassick (17) to reduce Bishops to 121/5. However, a late flourish from Litha Mbiko (22 off 16) and a crucial cameo from Michael Kruiskamp (18* off 8) helped Bishops post a challenging total of 168/7 in 20 overs. Campbell was the pick of the bowlers for St David’s, finishing with 3/43.
St David’s Batting Collapses Under Pressure
Chasing 169 in a high-stakes final, St David’s needed a strong start. However, Bishops’ bowlers immediately put them on the back foot. Kruiskamp struck early, dismissing SA Schools opener Armaan Manack, before Bassick trapped Phiri (9) lbw to leave St David’s struggling at 18/2.
Manack, who looked in fine touch, found a partner in his twin brother, Morteza, but their promising stand was cut short by Julian Pilkington. The leg-spinner, who has been instrumental in Bishops’ campaign, first removed Armaan Manack for 22 and then delivered a stunning googly to dismiss captain Basu for a golden duck.
With the scoreboard reading 50/4, the pressure proved too much for St David’s. Raa’id Arendse (2/8) and Kruiskamp combined to run out Hayden Campbell, while quick wickets from Pilkington and Arendse sealed the fate of the Johannesburg side. St David’s were bowled out for just 69 in 12.2 overs, falling well short of the target.
Match-Winning Performances
Bishops’ comprehensive victory was a result of key performances throughout the game. Captain Robb-Quinlan led from the front, contributing 26 runs and taking crucial dismissals behind the stumps. Pilkington was the standout bowler, finishing with figures of 3/12, while Arendse chipped in with 2/8.
Kruiskamp’s all-round contribution 18* with the bat and 1/10 with the ball played a vital role in keeping St David’s under pressure. The combined effort of Bishops’ bowling attack ensured that St David’s never recovered from their early setbacks.
