BLACKCAPS Lose Ben Sears Ahead of ICC Champions Trophy 2025
The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has yet to begin, but New Zealand has suffered a major blow with fast bowler Ben Sears ruled out due to a hamstring injury.
Sears sustained the injury during NZ’s first training session in Karachi and scans confirmed a minor tear, requiring at least two weeks of rehabilitation. This means he would only be available for NZ’s final Group A match against India in Dubai, making his inclusion impractical.
As a result, the BLACKCAPS have called up Jacob Duffy as Sears' replacement, ensuring the squad remains at full strength heading into the tournament.
Gary Stead on Sears’ Injury & Replacement
BLACKCAPS head coach Gary Stead expressed his disappointment over Sears' unfortunate exit:
"We’re all really feeling for Ben. It’s always tough being ruled out of a major event at such a late stage, and it’s especially tough in Ben’s case given it would have been his first major ICC event."
Given the short duration of the tournament, Stead emphasized that the team needed a fully fit player who could contribute immediately.
On the selection of Jacob Duffy, Stead said:
"Jacob showed in the recent home series against Sri Lanka that he is more than capable at the international level. He’s been part of the squad for the ODI Tri-Series, so he’s already acclimatized to the conditions and ready to go."
Duffy now gets his first chance to play in an ICC senior event, making it an exciting opportunity for the 29-year-old pacer.
What This Means for New Zealand’s CT 2025 Campaign
New Zealand enters the Champions Trophy with high expectations, but Sears’ absence could impact their pace attack.
NZ’s Pace Bowling Options: With Tim Southee and Trent Boult no longer part of the squad, the BLACKCAPS will rely on the likes of Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, and Jacob Duffy to spearhead the attack.
NZ’s First Match: The Kiwis kick off their Champions Trophy campaign against hosts Pakistan on February 19 in Karachi, a crucial match that could set the tone for their tournament.
