Chennai Super Kings Edge Kolkata Knight Riders in Last-Over Thriller at Eden Gardens
In a thrilling contest at Eden Gardens, Chennai Super Kings edged past Kolkata Knight Riders by 2 wickets in the 57th match of IPL 2025. Chasing 180, CSK stumbled early but a composed 52 from Dewald Brevis and a late surge by MS Dhoni (17* off 9) secured the win in the final over. Earlier, Ajinkya Rahane’s 48 and Andre Russell’s quickfire 38 powered KKR to 179/6. But it was Noor Ahmad’s 4-wicket haul that earned him Player of the Match honors, turning the game with key middle-order breakthroughs.
Kolkata Knight Riders: 179/6 (20 overs)
Ajinkya Rahane 48 (33), Andre Russell 38 (21)

Chennai Super Kings stun KKR with two-wicket win in a tense 57th match of IPL 2025
In what turned out to be another dramatic chapter in the storied rivalry between Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings, the visitors pulled off a nail-biting two-wicket victory at the Eden Gardens. With this result, CSK reminded fans why they are one of the most resilient teams in IPL history, even during a transitional season.
Despite being all but out of the playoff race, CSK’s youthful lineup, steered by the ever-inspirational MS Dhoni, showed grit and unpredictability to chase down a challenging 180-run target set by KKR. The match swung like a pendulum before being sealed in the final over.
KKR innings: Manish Pandey and Russell provide middle-overs momentum
Opting to bat first, Kolkata Knight Riders found runs from a mix of veterans and finishers. Rahmanullah Gurbaz fell early, while Sunil Narine’s rapid 26 gave KKR some early momentum. Ajinkya Rahane, who has been in fine touch all season, anchored the innings with a well-constructed 48 off 33 deliveries. However, KKR faltered in converting starts into big scores. The big damage came in the form of Noor Ahmad, who ripped through the middle order with a stunning 4/31.
The turning point for KKR came when Andre Russell exploded with a 38 off just 21 balls. His power-hitting, complemented by Manish Pandey’s calm 36 not out, pushed KKR to a respectable 179/6 by the end of 20 overs.
CSK innings: Dewald Brevis and Shivam Dube rescue the chase
CSK’s chase began on a nightmare note, losing Ayush Mhatre and Devon Conway for ducks inside the first two overs. However, Urvil Patel’s fearless 31 and Dewald Brevis’ fiery 52 off 25 balls stabilized the innings. Even though wickets kept tumbling, including those of Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin, CSK kept pushing the scoring rate thanks to Brevis and later Shivam Dube.
The game seemed to tilt in KKR’s favor after Brevis fell at 127/6, but MS Dhoni and Noor Ahmad stitched together small yet crucial contributions. Dhoni's 17 off 8 was short but vital, especially under pressure. The final blow came from Anshul Kamboj, who hit the winning runs to take CSK to 183/8 with two balls remaining.
Noor Ahmad: The Game Changer
Awarded Player of the Match, Noor Ahmad’s 4/31 not only disrupted KKR’s flow but also validated CSK’s decision to back youth. The Afghan spinner dismissed Narine, Raghuvanshi, Russell, and Rinku Singh—all impact players—and finished with one of the most valuable spells of the season for his team.
Where the match was won
What gave CSK the edge was their unflinching intent. Even with five wickets down in the powerplay, they never shifted into survival mode. Instead, they counter-attacked through Brevis and Dube, creating scoreboard pressure. KKR’s bowling lacked penetration in the final five overs, which cost them dearly.
Moreover, CSK’s spinners played a smart hand, particularly in the middle overs. Ravindra Jadeja’s control and Noor’s aggression squeezed KKR at the right moments, never allowing the innings to fully take flight.
What this means going forward
This win may not boost CSK’s playoff hopes drastically, but it certainly restores pride. For a franchise that has won five IPL titles, giving young talents like Noor, Brevis, and Urvil opportunities—and watching them thrive—is the bigger win in the long run.
As for KKR, the defeat puts them in a precarious situation. Every match is now a must-win, and their net run rate may come into play. Their over-reliance on Russell and Rahane is evident, and the middle-order inconsistency continues to haunt them.
