CWI/WIPA Awards 2025: Celebrating Cricket’s Past, Present, and Future
Honouring the Spirit of West Indies Cricket
Cricket West Indies (CWI) and the West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) have unveiled the full list of nominees for the 8th CWI/WIPA Awards Gala, scheduled to take place on June 22, 2025, at the majestic Wyndham Grand Barbados Sam Lord’s Castle. More than just a night of glitz and trophies, this gala is designed to celebrate not only statistical brilliance but also the stories, sacrifices, and soul of West Indies cricket.
This year’s edition carries special emotional weight. It marks the 50th anniversary of West Indies' historic 1975 ICC Cricket World Cup win — a landmark moment under the legendary leadership of Sir Clive Lloyd. That victory wasn't just a triumph on the field; it was a symbol of regional pride and collective identity that united the Caribbean like few other moments in sporting history.
CWI CEO Chris Dehring summed it up aptly: “The CWI/WIPA Awards Gala is more than an awards gala it’s an opportunity for reflection and renewal. That 1975 win ignited a spirit that still inspires generations today.”
The Nominees: Recognising Outstanding Performers Across Formats
The nominations for the 2025 edition feature both household names and rising stars, cutting across formats and competitions in men’s and women’s cricket. From the patience of Kraigg Brathwaite in red-ball Tests to the flair of Hayley Matthews in white-ball cricket, the selections reflect the depth and diversity of talent across the region.
Test Player of the Year sees a competitive list including fast-rising sensation Shamar Joseph, a revelation in West Indies’ pace attack. Alongside him are seasoned performers like Jayden Seales, Alzarri Joseph, and skipper Brathwaite, who continues to anchor innings and leadership with calm authority.
In the white-ball formats, Shai Hope and Gudakesh Motie stand out in the ODI category, while Nicholas Pooran and Rovman Powell headline the T20 nominations after their impactful performances both at home and in franchise leagues.
The women’s categories are equally stacked, with Hayley Matthews appearing in both the ODI and T20 shortlists. Her all-round brilliance continues to make her one of the most valuable players in global cricket. Stafanie Taylor and Afy Fletcher join her, veterans who have consistently carried the torch for women’s cricket in the region.
Domestic Competitions in the Spotlight
Recognition extends beyond international cricket to players who shone in regional tournaments. In the West Indies Championship, Kraigg Brathwaite features again, joined by standout performers like Mikyle Louis and Jomel Warrican, reflecting the intense competition within red-ball domestic ranks.
T20 dynamo Shimron Hetmyer and consistent performer Gudakesh Motie headline the Regional T20 Player of the Year category, while Leniko Boucher and Rahkeem Cornwall lead the nominations in the CG United Super50 Cup.
The CWI Women’s T20 Blaze and Super50 Women’s Cup also see rising names like Ashmini Munisar, Rashada Williams, and Plaffiana Millington receive nods, underlining the ever-improving domestic structure for women’s cricket in the Caribbean.
Beyond Trophies: A Gala with Legacy
This awards gala is more than a trophy haul it’s a tribute to a tradition of cricket that has inspired the world. As Wavell Hinds, President of WIPA, eloquently stated, “This is a celebration of talent, yes, but more importantly, it is a testament to the courage, character, and community behind the game.”
The evening promises to be both nostalgic and aspirational. The players being celebrated are not only performers but flag bearers of a unique cricketing culture. Their excellence sets the bar not just for personal achievement but for regional pride and future inspiration.
Fans can expect more details soon on how to tune into the live broadcast. As the cricketing fraternity gears up for June 22, there’s a palpable sense of anticipation not just for who wins, but for the stories that get shared and remembered.
