Sameer Rizvi Shines Bright as Delhi Capitals Chase Down 206 to Beat Punjab Kings
On a Jaipur evening brimming with energy and expectations, Delhi Capitals produced a composed and calculated chase to overhaul Punjab Kings’ total of 206 and register a morale-boosting 6-wicket win in Match 66 of IPL 2025. What began as a high-scoring contest soon turned into a display of youth, temperament, and fearless cricket highlighted by a sensational unbeaten knock from Sameer Rizvi, who was deservedly named Player of the Match.
The victory, sealed with three balls to spare, marked a positive close to Delhi’s rollercoaster season, giving their management plenty of reasons to believe in the next generation of IPL stars.
Punjab Kings Post 206 on the Back of Iyer and Stoinis
Opting to bat first at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Punjab Kings were rocked early when Priyansh Arya fell in the second over. But the pair of Josh Inglis (32 off 23) and Prabhsimran (28 off 18) stitched together brisk runs before falling in quick succession.
Captain Shreyas Iyer then took command of the innings with a fluent 53 off 34, peppering the gaps and clearing the ropes when required. His calculated aggression kept the scoring rate healthy. However, with wickets falling regularly at the other end, the Kings appeared at risk of losing steam.
That changed when Marcus Stoinis exploded in the final overs, hammering 44 off 16 with pure brute force. His innings, including four towering sixes, lifted Punjab to a formidable 206/8 in 20 overs. Delhi’s bowling attack had its moments, particularly through Mustafizur Rahman (3/30) and Vipraj Nigam (2/38), who broke the spine of the Kings' top and middle order.
Delhi Capitals’ Chase: Rizvi and Nair Script Stunning Turnaround
Chasing 207 in a must-win scenario is always daunting, and Delhi got off to a mixed start. After losing KL Rahul and Faf du Plessis in the powerplay, the responsibility fell on Karun Nair and Sediqullah Atal to steady the ship.
Nair, often under scrutiny in recent seasons, responded with a stylish 44 off 27, dominating spinners and rotating strike cleverly. Atal added 22 before falling to a clever change of pace from Praveen Dubey. Delhi seemed slightly behind the rate when Nair was dismissed in the 15th over with still over 50 runs to get.
Enter Sameer Rizvi the 21-year-old right-hander brought clarity, calmness, and explosive batting to the chase. Rizvi’s 58 off just 25 balls* was laced with five sixes and three fours, including the winning blow over long-on. His ability to target the right bowlers and maintain composure under pressure underlined his growing maturity in the format.
Together with *Tristan Stubbs (18 off 14)**, Rizvi guided Delhi to 208/4 in 19.3 overs, completing a perfect chase and stamping his authority as one of the standout performers of IPL 2025’s closing stages.
Punjab Kings’ Bowling Falters in Crucial Moments
Despite posting a strong total, Punjab’s bowling lacked bite when it mattered most. Harpreet Brar (2/41) was the only bowler to make notable breakthroughs, while Marco Jansen and Azmatullah struggled for consistency. The decision to bring on Marcus Stoinis late in the innings backfired, as Delhi targeted him in the final two overs.
Fielding too cost PBKS vital runs with dropped chances and misfields in pressure overs, further compounding their issues.
Delhi Capitals End Campaign on a High Note
Though Delhi Capitals fell short of the playoffs, this victory brought closure to their season, reflecting their young core’s potential. With stalwarts like Axar Patel and T Natarajan on the bench and performers like Rizvi, Atal, and Nigam stepping up, DC’s roadmap for 2026 appears promising.
Coach Kevin Pietersen and mentor Hemang Badani will be pleased with the way their team has evolved over the season, especially with emerging Indian players taking responsibility.
For Punjab, this defeat highlighted the need to rethink death-over execution and middle-order stability, something head coach Ricky Ponting will no doubt address during the offseason.
