Delhi Capitals’ Innings – Early Drama, Late Fireworks

Sent in to bat after Rajasthan Royals won the toss, Delhi Capitals had a fiery yet fluctuating start. Jake Fraser-McGurk, known for his explosive style, briefly entertained with a nine-ball 15 before falling to Jofra Archer, who struck with the very first ball of the innings and later added Karun Nair’s wicket in a probing spell.

While wickets fell early, it was Abishek Porel (49 off 37) who played the anchor at the top, stitching vital runs to keep Delhi from freefalling. KL Rahul, ever the craftsman, worked the middle overs with fluency for his 38 off 32, rotating strike and cashing in on the bad balls. However, the real explosion came late.

Axar Patel led the charge with a game-altering 34 off just 14 balls a captain’s knock featuring 2 sixes and 4 boundaries. Tristan Stubbs followed up with a blistering unbeaten 34 off 18, helping Delhi plunder runs in the death overs, with the final tally touching 188/5.

RR’s bowlers, especially Sandeep Sharma, crumbled under pressure in the final over conceding 19 runs in an 11-ball nightmare including four wides and a no-ball. While Jofra Archer was the pick of the attack with 2/32, others, including Hasaranga and Theekshana, failed to rein in Delhi’s finishers.

Rajasthan Royals’ Response – Aggression and a Big Setback

Rajasthan’s chase began aggressively, with Yashasvi Jaiswal looking fluent. He smoked 51 off 37 deliveries, featuring 3 fours and 4 sixes. Partnering him at the top, Sanju Samson played a captain’s knock until misfortune struck a sudden rib strain forced him to retire hurt on 31. That moment proved pivotal, disrupting RR’s rhythm and robbing them of an experienced hand during the chase's crunch phase.

Riyan Parag’s promotion didn’t yield much (8 off 11), but Nitish Rana stepped in to play one of his finest hands of the season 51 off 28, filled with power and intent. With his striking, Rajasthan stayed afloat, reaching 161/2 before Rana’s dismissal opened the door for Delhi’s bowlers.

Dhruv Jurel (26 off 17) and Hetmyer (15* off 9) brought it down to 9 needed off the last over a scenario tailor-made for Mitchell Starc to make a statement.

Starc’s Super Final Over Forces a Tie

With the match on a knife’s edge, Starc proved every bit the death-over specialist he is reputed to be. Conceding just 7 off the final six deliveries, including two well-directed yorkers and two singles off the last two balls, he turned the equation in Delhi’s favour.

The final delivery saw Dhruv Jurel scampering for a second run that wasn’t there, thanks to a stunning throw from Stubbs and razor-sharp glovework from KL Rahul. The run-out confirmed the match as tied and sparked the first Super Over of IPL 2025.

Super Over Drama – Delhi Keeps Cool, Rajasthan Stumbles

Rajasthan batted first in the Super Over, sending in Hetmyer and Jaiswal. Starc, brimming with rhythm and focus, gave nothing away. With pinpoint deliveries, he restricted RR to a paltry 6-run total, putting Delhi firmly in the driver’s seat.

Stubbs and Axar took strike for the chase. Facing a nervous Sandeep Sharma, Stubbs cracked a boundary on the third ball to ease pressure. Two balls later, Axar lifted the fifth delivery to the mid-wicket fence to complete the chase and cue the celebrations.

The crowd erupted, and so did the Delhi dugout. For a side that had been dealt a tough loss in their previous outing, this was a defining comeback.

What This Means for Both Sides

With this victory, Delhi Capitals moved to 10 points in the IPL 2025 standings, firmly positioning themselves in the top half of the table with five wins in six games. The team appears balanced, confident, and able to win the clutch moments the Super Over win reinforcing that belief.

Rajasthan Royals, meanwhile, stay stuck at 4 points. Their campaign has been riddled with injuries, inconsistent batting, and dropped opportunities. The loss of Sanju Samson both mid-innings and potentially for the next game adds to their woes. Nitish Rana’s return to form is a bright spot, but RR will need much more to turn the corner from here.

Player of the Match – Mitchell Starc

Starc’s spell was arguably the most influential phase of the game. Not just for his 1/36 in regulation play, but for the composure and execution he brought in the final over and the Super Over. In games decided by inches, Starc stood tall.
