With WPL 2025 just around the corner, Delhi Capitals (DC) are leaving no stone unturned in their pre-season camp in Pune, preparing for another title challenge. Among the players eager to make an impact this season is Shafali Verma, the dynamic opener, who is looking forward to fresh opportunities and a strong comeback on the big stage.
“The preparations are going in full swing. The atmosphere here is really good and everyone is gelling up quite well,” Verma shared after an intense training session.
WPL’s Impact on Verma’s Growth
As a pivotal player for DC, who reached back-to-back finals in the first two seasons, Verma acknowledged the immense value WPL brings to players, both in terms of match experience and learning from international cricketers.
“The players get to play a good number of matches in WPL. You get some very good opportunities to make small tweaks here and there in your game. Personally, I have learnt how to build my innings while being a part of WPL," she highlighted.
Beyond technical skills, Verma emphasized the importance of composure, something she has observed from overseas cricketers.
“The experience of playing with foreign players is a different learning for all of us. One of the things that I like the most is the way they keep themselves calm and composed on and off the field. That is one learning that I have got while playing with the overseas players,” she added.
Overcoming Challenges and Eyeing a Comeback
The past few months have been emotionally challenging for Verma. She faced a setback when she was dropped from the ODI squad in November last year, just days after dealing with a personal crisis her father’s heart attack.
"To be honest, the past few months have been tough for me. My father suffered a heart attack, and just a couple of days later, I was dropped from the ODI squad. So, it was a mentally difficult phase, but my father encouraged me, and my family stood by me throughout," she shared.
Instead of letting the setback define her, Verma bounced back in spectacular fashion, finishing as the leading run-scorer in the Senior Women's One-Day Challenger Trophy. She amassed 414 runs in five matches at an average of 82.80, with a strike rate of 145.26, including one century and three fifties.
Her determination is unwavering as she eyes a return to the national team.
“I’ve realised that my job is to score runs whenever I get the opportunity, and that’s where I want to focus. The only thing in my control is my preparation. If I train well and score runs, I know I can come back stronger," she concluded.
DC’s WPL 2025 Journey Begins
As DC gears up for another shot at the WPL title, Verma’s presence at the top order will be crucial. The team will kickstart their WPL 2025 campaign against Mumbai Indians (MI) on February 15 in Vadodara.
Having fallen short in the last two finals, DC will look to go the distance this time, and with Verma in form, the team is set to be a strong contender once again.
About Delhi Capitals
DC is one of the founding franchises of the WPL and competes in both the IPL and WPL. Co-owned by the GMR Group and JSW Group, the team was originally known as Delhi Daredevils before rebranding in 2019.
Since then, DC has reached multiple finals, including the WPL inaugural season and the 2024 edition, finishing as runners-up on both occasions. With a strong squad and a determined mindset, the team aims to go all the way in WPL 2025.
