UPW won by 33 runs

The Women’s Premier League 2025 saw an exciting clash as DCW locked horns with UPW at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. After winning the toss, DCW opted to bowl first, hoping to capitalize on early breakthroughs. However, UPW showcased resilience, posting a strong total of 177/9 in their 20 overs. Despite DCW’s efforts, their chase fell short, and UPW clinched a well-deserved 33-run victory.

UPW's Commanding Batting Performance

UPW’s innings started with Kiran Navgire and Vrinda Dinesh at the crease. While Navgire departed after scoring 17 off 20, Vrinda added a quick 4 off 7 before falling to Marizanne Kapp. The middle order was steadied by skipper Deepti Sharma, who managed 13 off 19, but the real impact came from Tahlia McGrath, who played a blistering knock of 24 off 23 at a strike rate of 104.35. Shweta Sehrawat’s aggressive 11 off just 6 balls boosted the run rate, while Grace Harris couldn’t contribute much, departing for just 2.

The standout performer for UPW was Chinelle Henry, who played a game-changing knock of 62 off 32 balls, hitting 3 sixes and 8 fours at a staggering strike rate of 269.57. Sophie Ecclestone also made a quick impact with a 12-ball 28, adding crucial runs towards the end. Saima Thakor remained unbeaten on 4 as UPW finished at 177/9.

DCW’s Bowling Struggles

Despite their disciplined start, DCW bowlers found it tough to contain UPW’s aggressive batting. Kapp was the pick of the bowlers, taking 2 wickets for 18 runs in 4 overs. Shikha Pandey, Arundhati Reddy, and Jess Jonassen also chipped in with wickets, but the onslaught from Henry and Ecclestone took the game away. Jonassen picked up 3 wickets but conceded 37 runs, while Reddy finished with figures of 3/52.

DCW’s Faltering Chase

DCW’s chase began on a shaky note, with skipper Meg Lanning falling early for 5 off 5 balls, dismissed by Kranti Goud. Shafali Verma tried to anchor the innings with 24 off 30 but couldn’t accelerate. The highlight of DCW’s batting was Jemimah Rodrigues, who played a sensational knock of 56 off 35 at a strike rate of 160.00, hitting 5 fours and 2 sixes. However, the lack of support from the other end made the chase difficult.

Marizanne Kapp and Annabel Sutherland contributed 9 and 5 runs, respectively, before falling to Chinelle Henry and Grace Harris. Jess Jonassen attempted to fight back with a steady 5 off 4, but DCW kept losing wickets at regular intervals. The lower order couldn’t add much, as Sarah Bryce, Niki Prasad, and Arundhati Reddy all departed cheaply. Shikha Pandey remained unbeaten with a fighting 15 off 13, but it wasn’t enough as DCW were bundled out for 144 in 19.3 overs.

UPW’s Clinical Bowling Effort

UPW’s bowlers executed their plans perfectly, with Kranti Goud leading the charge with 4 wickets for 25 runs in 4 overs. Chinelle Henry complemented her batting heroics with a brilliant bowling spell, picking up 2 wickets for 21 runs. Grace Harris also played a key role, taking 4 wickets for just 15 runs. Deepti Sharma and Sophie Ecclestone kept the pressure on, restricting DCW’s batters from finding momentum.

Match Summary

UPW’s all-round performance ensured a comfortable win, with Henry’s explosive batting and Goud’s disciplined bowling proving to be the difference-makers. DCW, despite a valiant effort from Rodrigues, couldn’t withstand the pressure and suffered their second loss in WPL 2025.

With this win, UPW continues to build momentum, while DCW will need to reassess their approach moving forward in the tournament.
