The Hollywoodbets Dolphins delivered a stunning performance to defeat the Momentum Multiply Titans by 65 runs in a gripping 1 Day Cup qualifier at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead on Wednesday night. With this dominant victory, the Dolphins secured their place in the final, where they will take on Goldrush Boland in Paarl on Sunday.
Maharaj and Luus Lead Bowling Charge
Keshav Maharaj and Tristan Luus played pivotal roles in dismantling the Titans’ batting lineup, sharing six wickets between them. Maharaj’s experience and accuracy, coupled with Luus’ ability to exploit the conditions, left the visitors struggling from the outset. Their combined efforts ensured that the Titans never recovered from their early setbacks, eventually folding for just 163 in 36.4 overs.
The result was a significant upset, considering the Titans' formidable form in recent matches. Having bulldozed their way to the playoffs, they were expected to be a tough challenge, but the Dolphins' resilience and tactical execution proved to be the difference on the night.
Dolphins Overcome Early Batting Collapse
The Dolphins found themselves in trouble early after losing key wickets before reaching the 100-run mark. Tshepang Dithole (8), Bryce Parsons (15), Jon-Jon Smuts (22), Khayelihle Zondo (20), and Jason Smith (14) all fell cheaply as the Titans’ bowling attack, led by former Dolphins all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo, exerted control. Phehlukwayo was the standout performer for the Titans, finishing with impressive figures of 4/28.
However, the Dolphins fought back through rookie Hanu Viljoen, who showcased remarkable composure under pressure. His 57 off 65 balls, featuring four boundaries and a six, marked his third consecutive half-century in the tournament. Alongside Eathan Bosch (40), Viljoen stitched together an 86-run partnership for the sixth wicket, which proved crucial in helping the Dolphins recover.
Despite the solid stand, the Dolphins suffered another mini-collapse when Bosch was dismissed by Phehlukwayo, while Roelof van der Merwe (2/33) removed Viljoen. Andile Simelane (3) also fell soon after, leaving the Dolphins at risk of falling short of a competitive total.
Keshav Maharaj (25*) and Prenelan Subrayen (17*) played vital cameos towards the end, ensuring the Dolphins posted a respectable 228/8 in their 50 overs. Their late contributions added valuable runs, which ultimately proved decisive in the match.
Titans Struggle in Run Chase
Chasing 229, the Titans needed a strong start but found themselves in early trouble when Eathan Bosch ran out Rivaldo Moonsamy for 9. The wickets continued to tumble as Luus and Maharaj tore through the batting lineup.
Lhuan-dre Pretorius (12) and Keegan Petersen (18) both fell to Luus (3/48), while Neil Brand could only manage 7 before being dismissed by Subrayen (1/35). Before that, Jhedli van Briesies (14) was bowled by Maharaj, further tightening the Dolphins' grip on the match.
The Titans’ hopes rested on young sensation Dewald Brevis, who tried to inject some momentum into the innings. His quickfire 36 off 25 balls, including four sixes, briefly lifted the visitors' spirits, but he lacked support from the other end. Once Brevis departed with the score at 103, the writing was on the wall for the Titans.
Without substantial partnerships to rebuild the chase, the Titans crumbled under the pressure. The Dolphins’ disciplined bowling attack wrapped up the innings in 36.4 overs, securing a comprehensive 65-run victory.
Dolphins Look Ahead to the Final
With this emphatic win, the Dolphins have booked their place in the 1 Day Cup final, where they will face Goldrush Boland in Paarl on Sunday. The team will take confidence from their ability to overcome adversity and deliver in high-pressure moments.
Reflecting on the victory, Dolphins skipper Keshav Maharaj praised his side’s fighting spirit. “It was a tough start, but the way Viljoen and Bosch built that partnership, and then how our bowlers executed, was fantastic. We knew Titans were in great form, but we backed ourselves to play our best cricket,” he said.
Goldrush Boland, who have also been in excellent form, will pose a formidable challenge in the final. The Dolphins will need another all-round team effort to lift the trophy, but their resilience and ability to step up in crucial moments make them a serious contender.
