In a senior team restructuring, the ECB names Brendon McCullum as the head coach of the England men's white-ball team.
As part of a strategic restructuring of the England Men's senior set-up, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) today stated that Brendon McCullum, the current head coach of the men's test team, will also assume the position of head coach for the country's white-ball team.
Having taken the lead since May 2022, McCullum has extended his term to the end of 2027. Beginning in January 2025, in conjunction with England's white-ball tour of India and the ICC Champions Trophy, he will take charge of both the Test and white-ball sides.
Marcus Trescothick will take on the role of Interim Head Coach in the interim for the forthcoming series against Australia and the Caribbean trip later in the year.
England Men's Cricket Managing Director Rob Key offered the following remarks regarding the reorganization:
"I'm thrilled that Brendon has decided to work with England in both roles going forward. I think it is tremendously fortunate for us that a coach of his caliber is willing to dedicate himself fully to English cricket.
It's really exciting to be able to align all of the teams at this point, and we're eager to take on any difficulties that may arise.
The white-ball situation has been difficult for the past two years due to frequent format collisions; however, these are beginning to lessen in January.
"We're convinced that this restructuring will bring out the best in our players and coaching staff, and the timing of the calendar (from January) will allow him to give the appropriate emphasis to both roles.”
Additionally, England men's head coach Brendon McCullum said:
I've had a great time working with the Test team, and I can't wait to expand my responsibilities to include the white-ball sides. I'm thrilled to collaborate closely with Jos (Buttler) and the team to expand on the solid foundations that are already in place. I'm ready to take on this new task.
I found great resonance in Rob Key's vision for the future of English cricket. With the timetable being less demanding the next year, the concept of a single coaching organization made perfect sense. The idea of leading both teams excites me, and I'm appreciative of the ECB's and my family's support as I assume these new duties.
"English cricketers have a great deal of talent, and I'm excited to help them realize their full potential." My objective is to establish a setting in which everyone can prosper and in which we can maintain our elite level of competition in all formats.
McCullum will take a little break back home in New Zealand following the conclusion of the Test series against Sri Lanka at the Kia Oval next week. He will then rejoin the Test team for their winter tours of Pakistan in October and the three-match Test series against New Zealand in December.
