Ed Joyce to Step Down as Ireland Women’s Head Coach After World Cup Qualifiers

Ed Joyce, one of Ireland’s most celebrated cricketers, has announced that he will step down as head coach of IRE Women’s cricket after the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier in April. The 46-year-old took charge in 2019 and has overseen a remarkable transformation in the women’s game, guiding the team through one of its most successful periods.

A Legacy of Growth and Success

Since Joyce’s appointment, Ireland Women (IRE-W) have evolved significantly, both in terms of on-field performances and structural development. Under his leadership, Ireland played 97 matches, securing 51 wins, including memorable victories against ENG (twice), PAK (in PAK), and BAN (in BAN).

Reflecting on his tenure, Joyce highlighted how Ireland’s professional setup has grown from six part-time contracts in 2019 to 23 contracts, with several players now on full-time deals.

“The last six years have been an incredible journey—not just for me personally, but for the players, coaches, and the entire performance programme,” Joyce said.

Despite these achievements, Joyce believes it is time for fresh leadership to take over, ensuring the team continues to develop and thrive.

A Career Rooted in Irish Cricket

A former IRE and ENG cricketer, Joyce retired in 2018 after playing 151 matches for Ireland. He initially worked as a batting coach for IRE Men before transitioning to his role as IRE-W head coach.

As he prepares for his final assignment the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier in Pakistan Joyce remains hopeful that he can lead Ireland to their first ODI World Cup since 2005.

“A team is far more than just the eleven on the field. Everyone players, families, coaches has been part of this journey. This is not, I hope, the end of my connection with Irish cricket.”

Cricket Ireland’s Tribute

Graeme West, Director of High Performance at Cricket Ireland, acknowledged Joyce’s tremendous contributions, stating:

“Ed’s impact on IRE-W cricket will be felt for years. He has transformed the team, giving them belief that they belong at the highest level.”

Although Cricket Ireland attempted to extend Joyce’s contract, he felt that it was the right time for a leadership change.

As Joyce prepares to bow out, Ireland’s cricketing fraternity will hope his final chapter as coach culminates in a historic World Cup qualification.
