The 4th test of Ashes 2023 was played at Manchester. With Australia leading the series, 2-1 it is all to play for both the sides. England won the toss and chose to bowl first. Stuart Broad drew the first blood as he got the wicket of Usman Khawaja in the 5th over of the day. David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne battled through the next 9 overs stitching a partnership of 46 runs before Chris Woakes got rid of the experienced David Warner for 32 runs.
At the end of the first session, Australia found themselves at 107-2. England got a great start to the 2nd session by dismissing the dangerous Steve Smith for a well made 41. England had used their DRS at the right time intelligently. There was a 63-run partnership between Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne which stabilised the Australian innings. In the 47th over, Marnus Labuschagne was dismissed for 51 runs by Moeen Ali. Within the next 4 overs, Stuart Broad dismissed the well set Travis Head to reach his landmark 600th wicket.
There was a 65-run partnership between Mitchell Marsh and Cameron Green. Mitchell Marsh played a counter attacking knock of 51 runs before being dismissed off Chris Woakes. England got back into the game with the wickets of both Cameron Green and Mitch Marsh in a single over. Mitchell Starc and Alex Carey put on a 39-run partnership as far as the lower middle order is concerned. England finished the day on a high by dismissing Alex Carey. Australia finished at 299/8 as. At the end of Day 1, England was in a commanding position.
