A significant victory here at Old Trafford as India has come out of nowhere to coast to victory. Rishabh Pant has a big smile on his face as he gets praised by both opponents and teammates. He played a fantastic knock today, reaching his first ODI century and finally leading his team home in style with eight overs to spare. But don't overlook Pandya's contribution. He was exceptional with both the ball and the bat. Pant was the more reserved of the two as they attempted to rebuild the innings from 72/4.
But Pandya's timing was perfect from the moment he stepped out. The two put up a 133-run fifth-wicket partnership, and when Stokes took a brilliant diving catch to dispatch Pandya on 71, India was only 55 runs away. Pant cracked a joke of it, smashing five boundaries in an over before ending with a reverse-sweep. We've already seen him perform extraordinary things in Test cricket in his short career, and now he's arrived in ODIs. His glovework is also getting better and better. Buttler was the only one who blew a chance with the gloves today, as he could've had a stumping opportunity against Pant early in his innings but failed to grab the ball that cost England heavily.
What a start for England, Roy punished the Indian bowler for three boundaries in the very first over. Siraj, who has returned to the XI, makes an impact straight away as he got both Bairstow and Root out in his first over. The counter-attack started with Roy and Stokes to build a partnership but both fell to Pandya who had a great day with the ball. Buttler and Moeen have endured their moment, and they are finally getting into their rhythm. They have added more than 50 now but it's not enough for England. They need these two to carry on. The left-arm spinner strikes in his first over, and India desperately needed this wicket since this pair was developing.
The England captain Jos Buttler scores a crucial fifty to hold this innings together. Buttler and Livingstone were both trapped by Pandya in the same over as Jadeja starred on the field. Then Willey and Overton added 48 runs to take England above 300 before Chahal came on and easily finished the session. Hardik Pandya claimed four wickets and Yuzvendra Chahal three as India bowled out England for 259.
Mohammed Siraj hit twice in the same over to give India a short lead against England before Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali took control. The target is no longer large, yet it may be difficult to reach. In the previous game, India failed to chase something lesser. The wicket offers some pace and bounce, but India will be confident in their ability to chase this down. England, on the other hand, will have to take wickets early once more. If they do, the game is on! Keep an eye out for the second half.
