Fakhar Zaman Relives Iconic 2017 Champions Trophy Triumph

Fakhar Zaman Relives His 2017 Champions Trophy Heroics Ahead of ICC CT 2025

Fakhar Zaman arrived at the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 as an uncapped ODI player. By the time he returned home, he was a national hero, with thousands gathering to celebrate his match-winning century against India in the final. Now, as he prepares to feature in ICC Champions Trophy 2025 on home soil, Fakhar hopes to recreate the magic of eight years ago.

From Debut to Stardom

Fakhar didn’t feature in Pakistan’s opening match against India, which ended in a crushing 124-run loss. However, he was handed his ODI debut in the must-win clash against South Africa. With a quickfire 31 off 23 balls, Fakhar announced his arrival.

“That innings is still one of my favorites,” he recalled. “I didn’t feel much pressure then, but the nerves started kicking in as we progressed through the tournament.”

Pakistan edged past Sri Lanka in a tense encounter to reach the semi-finals, where they stunned an in-form England side with a dominant bowling display. Suddenly, a team that had started as underdogs was in the final against their arch-rivals, India.

The Final That Changed Everything

On the eve of the final, Fakhar nearly pulled out due to illness. “I told Mickey Arthur (head coach) that I wasn’t fit to play. He insisted, ‘Even if you get out first ball, you’re playing!’ I’m glad he did.”

Pakistan batted first at The Oval, and despite not feeling at his best, Fakhar played the innings of his life. His 114 off 106 balls propelled Pakistan to 338/4. Interestingly, he was caught off Jasprit Bumrah for just three runs early on only to be saved by a no-ball.

“I always used to joke about getting out on a no-ball and getting another chance,” Fakhar laughed. “That day, it actually happened. I knew then that maybe this was my day.”

Mohammad Amir then ran through India’s top order, sealing a 180-run victory the biggest margin in a Champions Trophy final. Fakhar was named Player of the Match.

A Hero’s Welcome in Pakistan

Returning home, Fakhar was overwhelmed by the love from fans. “People traveled 500 km just to take a picture with me. It was unbelievable. I will never forget those celebrations.”

Now, with ICC Champions Trophy 2025 being held in Pakistan, Fakhar is eager to create more unforgettable memories. “The way we made people feel in 2017, I want to do that again.”

Will Fakhar Zaman deliver another Champions Trophy classic in 2025? Cricket fans can’t wait to find out!
