Girls Shine in Schools SA20 as Future Proteas Make Their Mark
The Schools SA20 Final Showdown is off to an electrifying start, with young cricketing talents showcasing their skills in the girls’ section at the University of Pretoria. Among the standout performers were South Africa U19 players Karabo Meso and Jenna-Lee Lubbe, who played crucial roles in their teams’ victories during a thrilling opening day.
Steyn City School set the tone early, securing a commanding seven-wicket win over Victoria Hub in a rain-shortened five-over match. National U19 wicketkeeper-batter Karabo Meso demonstrated her class with an unbeaten 26, guiding her team to victory. Meso, who was instrumental in the junior Proteas’ journey to the ICC U19 Women’s World Cup final in Malaysia earlier this year, is determined to lead her school to SA20 glory alongside fellow national teammate Diara Ramlakan.
Steyn City and Saints Christian School Off to Winning Starts
Despite adverse weather conditions shortening the contest, Steyn City capitalized on their opportunities. Victoria Hub had a promising start, with Imaan van Schalkwyk (14) providing stability before being dismissed. However, Jenna-Lee Lubbe, a non-traveling reserve for the South Africa U19 squad, spearheaded Steyn City's bowling attack with figures of 2/13, restricting Victoria Hub to a modest total of 33/3.
Victoria Hub’s Zaurah Titus (2/17) fought back with the ball, but Meso’s brilliance ensured a comfortable win for Steyn City.
Saints Christian School from Potchefstroom also made a strong statement, claiming a four-wicket victory over Nkowankowa Hub from Tzaneen. The star of the match was spin bowler Tshegofatso Monyela, who delivered an outstanding performance, picking up four wickets for just five runs. Her efforts limited Nkowankowa to a mere 33 runs and earned her the Player of the Day award. She will don a red cap in Friday’s matches as a mark of distinction.
Monyela’s performance was well-supported by Siphumelele Duma (2/7) and Gogontle Padi (2/11), who further dismantled Nkowankowa’s batting lineup.
Nkowankowa Hub struggled with the bat, with only Motlalepule Sebele (6*) and Faith Nkuna (6) managing to contribute runs. In response, Monyela once again led from the front, top-scoring for Saints Christian School with 10 runs, alongside Reabetswe Dithipe (7). Sebele (2/16) put up a fight with the ball, but Saints eventually secured victory.
Dr JL Dube High School Makes a Statement
KwaZulu-Natal champions Dr JL Dube High School also had a strong start to their campaign, overcoming Nomandi Junior Secondary School by seven wickets in a low-scoring contest.
Nomandi found themselves in deep trouble, bowled out for just 27 runs. Anelisa Mhlongo (3/8) and Zukiswa Msiya (2/6) did the damage with the ball, tearing through the batting order.
Msiya also made her mark with the bat, scoring nine runs, while Lungile Ngcobo (6*) ensured Dr JL Dube reached the target with ease. Nomandi’s Enkosi Mditshwa (2/9) put up a fight with the ball, but it wasn’t enough to stop Dr JL Dube from cruising to victory.
Future Stars on Display in SA20
The Schools SA20 tournament serves as a platform for South Africa’s rising cricketing talents, and this year’s edition has already unearthed players who could soon represent the senior Proteas. The performances of Meso, Lubbe, Monyela, and Mhlongo underline the depth of talent in the country’s pipeline.
With several matches still to come, the competition is set to intensify. Teams will be looking to build on their strong starts, while others will be eager to bounce back and stay in contention for the title.
Cricket South Africa’s investment in grassroots development is paying off, with these young players gaining invaluable experience. The tournament not only hones their skills but also prepares them for future international challenges.
