SA20 2025: Graeme Smith Hails Fan Loyalty and a ‘Big Growth Year’
The recently concluded Betway SA20 Season 3 has been hailed as a breakthrough year by League Commissioner Graeme Smith, who emphasized record-breaking performances, unwavering fan support, and the continued expansion of the tournament. From the crowning of a new champion, MI Cape Town, to sellout stadiums across South Africa, SA20 has firmly cemented its place as one of the premier franchise cricket leagues in the world.
A Season of Firsts and Record-Breaking Performances
SA20 2025 was a season of milestones, marking the rise of new stars and delivering unforgettable moments. MI Cape Town dethroned the double-defending champions, SEC, in a thrilling final at the Wanderers, securing their maiden title.
The season also witnessed history in the making, with Heinrich Klaasen (DSG) and Ryan Rickelton (MICT) becoming the first batters to cross the 1,000-run mark in SA20 history. The league also saw teams achieving perfection at home, with PR and MICT maintaining a 100% home record, making Newlands one of the most electrifying venues in the tournament.
Smith believes this level of consistency and success has strengthened the bond between fans and their teams, making home-ground advantage a major factor in the competition.
"Fan loyalty has grown from strength to strength. You could see how teams had incredible support, especially at their home venues," Smith said.
"Seventeen sellout matches, a final sold out 15 days before the event—this shows how much people love SA20. It's fantastic to see so many kids at the stadiums, falling in love with cricket."
Investing in the Future: Facilities and Grassroots Development
Beyond the packed stadiums and thrilling matches, SA20’s long-term vision remains focused on developing cricket at all levels. Smith revealed that the league is working closely with CSA to upgrade stadiums ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027, ensuring that South Africa’s cricketing infrastructure is world-class.
"We are constantly working on growing the talent pool and improving facilities. From upgrading stadiums to investing in youth programs, there is a lot happening behind the scenes," Smith explained.
SA20 has also taken a hands-on approach to grassroots development, funding initiatives like U-19 girls’ camps, umpire exchange programs, and coaching opportunities. In a major step forward, young South African coaches got the opportunity to experience the WPL in India, gaining exposure to top-tier cricketing environments.
"We also launched Schools SA20 this year. Outside of CSA, SA20 is now the biggest investor in grassroots cricket," Smith added.
Looking Ahead: SA20 Season 4 Begins December 26
With SA20’s rapid growth, the focus now shifts to Season 4, which will kick off on Boxing Day, December 26, 2025. The league is also exploring the possibility of hosting New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day matches, creating an even more exciting experience for fans.
"There’s a lot to consider, but we want to maximize opportunities for fans and take SA20 to the next level," Smith concluded.
With sellout crowds, record-breaking performances, and growing investment in the sport, SA20 is not just a cricket tournament it’s a movement that continues to elevate the game in South Africa.
