The DP World ILT20 2025 is heading into its most intense phase, with teams battling for a place in the playoffs. In a must-win encounter, Gulf Giants produced a stellar all-round performance to defeat Abu Dhabi Knight Riders by seven wickets at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. The victory not only pushed them to third place on the points table but also ensured that their playoff hopes remain intact.
Led by Gerhard Erasmus’ composed 47 and Tom Curran’s unbeaten 38, the Giants successfully chased down 123 in 17.5 overs, overcoming a shaky start in the powerplay. With this win, MI Emirates officially joined the Desert Vipers as the two confirmed playoff teams, while Gulf Giants still need favorable results to progress further.
Gulf Giants Overcome Early Setback to Seal the Chase
Chasing 124 for victory, Gulf Giants found themselves in early trouble when David Willey struck twice in the powerplay. Willey first removed James Vince, who chopped the ball onto his stumps for just seven runs, before trapping Jordan Cox LBW on the very next delivery.
At 27/2 after the powerplay, Gulf Giants were struggling to find momentum, with tight spells from Willey and Sunil Narine keeping the scoring rate in check. By the halfway mark, the Giants had reached just 50/2, with the pressure mounting.
However, Erasmus and Curran shifted gears in the 11th over, taking on Andre Russell for 17 runs in a single over. Curran continued the assault in the 13th over, smashing Terrance Hinds for 12 runs, putting the Giants firmly in control at 82/2 with just a run-a-ball required in the last seven overs.
Erasmus’ gritty 47-run knock came to an end when Jason Holder dismissed him in the 15th over, but Shimron Hetmyer stepped in and finished the chase in style. Hetmyer launched a massive six over deep midwicket before scoring the winning runs in the 18th over, sealing the win with 13 balls to spare.
Disciplined Bowling Effort Restricts Abu Dhabi Knight Riders
Earlier, Abu Dhabi Knight Riders struggled from the very start after being put into bat. Daniel Worrall and Mark Adair bowled with precision, reducing the Knight Riders to 4/2 within the first three overs as both Kyle Mayers and Andries Gous departed cheaply.
Roston Chase provided some stability, hitting a few boundaries, but his innings was cut short at 15 runs when Blessing Muzarabani struck, leaving Abu Dhabi at 24/3 after the powerplay.
David Willey, who played a crucial knock later, tried to stabilize the innings alongside Joe Clarke. However, tight bowling from Chris Jordan and Worrall ensured that runs were hard to come by, with four boundary-less overs pushing the pressure back on the batting side.
Clarke perished for 19 in the 12th over, and when Russell walked in, the Knight Riders hoped for a big finish. Willey launched two massive sixes before Russell followed with two boundaries, but his stay was short-lived as Tom Curran dismissed him for 15, halting the momentum once again.
David Willey’s Lone Fight in the Death Overs
With five overs remaining, Knight Riders were struggling at 80/5, desperately needing quick runs. Willey took charge, smashing a six off Mark Adair, but Adair struck back immediately, dismissing him for a well-fought 41 off 29 balls.
Local star Alishan Sharafu, who has been one of the standout batters for the Knight Riders this season, tried to push the total in the final overs. However, Gulf Giants’ bowlers maintained tight lines, allowing just three boundaries in the last four overs, restricting Abu Dhabi Knight Riders to a below-par total of 123/7.
Post-Match Reactions
Speaking after the match, Abu Dhabi Knight Riders captain Sunil Narine admitted that their batters failed to capitalize on the conditions.
"I think they bowled brilliantly and used the conditions to their advantage. We tried to take as many wickets as possible in the powerplay. We couldn't take many wickets in the middle overs, and it became easier for them. Jason Holder has been doing a fantastic job with the bat and the ball, but overall, we needed more runs on the board."
Daniel Worrall, who was named Player of the Match, praised Gulf Giants' diverse bowling attack:
"Opening the bowling with Mark Adair, we had to get off to a good start. Our bowling group prides itself on diversity left-arm, right-arm, tall, short we have a bit of everything. We’re glad that we’ve at least given ourselves a fighting chance. Now, we’ll be crossing our fingers for the next couple of days."
Gulf Giants’ Playoff Hopes Still Hang in the Balance
While this victory keeps Gulf Giants in contention, their fate now depends on other results in the league. With the Dubai Capitals and Sharjah Warriorz also vying for a playoff spot, every match becomes crucial in determining the final standings.
As the DP World ILT20 heads into its final phase, the battle for the remaining playoff spots is intensifying, making every encounter a must-watch for cricket fans.
