The ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 wasn't just a spectacular cricketing event; it was a massive economic celebration for its host nations the USA and the West Indies. A recently released report from the International Cricket Council (ICC) has revealed staggering figures, confirming that the tournament generated a total economic impact of USD1.66 billion across both regions. This landmark tournament has proven once again that cricket isn't just about bat and ball it's about business, tourism, culture, and community growth on an extraordinary scale.
Economic Impact of ICC T20 World Cup 2024 Leaves Lasting Legacy
The 2024 T20 World Cup, which ran from June 1 to June 29, 2024, featured 55 thrilling matches played across nine iconic venues in the USA and the Caribbean. This was a significant milestone for cricket in the USA, as it marked the first time the country co-hosted a major ICC event alongside the cricket-loving West Indies.
With cities like Nassau County (New York), Grand Prairie (Dallas), and Lauderhill (Florida) leading the charge in the USA, and venues spread across Barbados, Saint Lucia, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Antigua and Barbuda, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in the West Indies, the impact was widespread.
This extensive hosting opportunity gave rise to massive investments in infrastructure, including transport upgrades, hospitality sector expansion, and stadium enhancements. These improvements not only benefited the tournament but are set to serve local communities and future generations of athletes for years to come.
USA Reaps Significant Benefits from Hosting Cricket's Global Showpiece
The USA played host to 16 out of the 55 matches in the tournament, and the results were phenomenal. The ICC reported that the USA alone generated an economic impact of USD618.4 million. Much of this was driven by visitor spending on food, accommodation, and travel.
Cricket, traditionally not the most dominant sport in the USA, suddenly found itself at the center of sporting conversations, with fans flocking to stadiums and creating a vibrant atmosphere. The food and beverage spend alone stood at an impressive USD52.9 million in the USA, proving that the T20 World Cup was a commercial success off the field as well.
The growth of cricket in the USA was not just a sporting development but an economic triumph, with the tournament showcasing the potential of cricket as a global commercial powerhouse in non-traditional markets.
West Indies Enjoys Massive Economic Uplift from ICC T20 World Cup 2024
If the USA reaped great benefits, the Caribbean islands were not left behind. Among the six West Indian host locations, Barbados emerged as the top-performing destination, with an economic benefit of USD428 million. This was followed by Saint Vincent and the Grenadines with USD224 million and Saint Lucia at USD132 million. The combined total for Antigua and Barbuda, Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago reached an impressive USD259.6 million.
Visitors to these islands were not just cricket fans but contributors to the local economy, with increased spending on hotels, restaurants, and local businesses. Barbados, in particular, became a hub of fan engagement, with 50% of international visitors spending more than five nights on the island. This generated a food and beverage spend of USD22.9 million.
These figures clearly highlight the far-reaching benefits of hosting an ICC event, not just from a cricketing standpoint but also as a significant tourism driver.
Media Exposure Amplifies Tourism and Brand Value for Hosts
The ICC report further outlined that the 2024 T20 World Cup generated a media impact valued at USD92.5 million for businesses and stakeholders across host locations. From branding on team kits to breathtaking visuals of iconic locations, the event projected the USA and West Indies onto the global stage like never before.
The exposure wasn't just limited to cricket enthusiasts; it reached mainstream audiences worldwide, providing invaluable branding for local tourism sectors. Between 49% to 74% of visitors surveyed expressed interest in returning to the host locations, adding a future tourism impact estimation of USD36.6 million.
