India Bowlers Shine as Senior Side Struggles in Perth Warm-Up Match
India’s preparation for the upcoming Test series against Australia hit a few bumps as they faced India A in an intra-squad warm-up match at Perth’s WACA ground. The high-intensity simulation tested India’s batting lineup, with several senior players struggling against the discipline and bounce of the India A bowlers. KL Rahul’s injury scare further added to the team’s concerns, but standout performances from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill in the second innings provided some respite.

First Innings: Senior Side Stumbles
KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal opened the batting for the senior XI in overcast conditions. Rahul began confidently, negotiating the short-pitched deliveries well, but his innings ended prematurely when a rising delivery from Prasidh Krishna struck his elbow. He retired hurt on 18, leaving his availability for the Test series opener uncertain.
Jaiswal (15) followed soon after, nicking to second slip off Navdeep Saini. Virat Kohli showcased glimpses of his trademark elegance with two gorgeous cover drives but was caught at second slip by Mukesh Kumar for 15. Shubman Gill played a cautious knock of 28 before fending a short ball to gully off Saini.
Rishabh Pant (19) started aggressively but was bowled by Nitish Kumar Reddy, who also dismissed Dhruv Jurel (20). Ravichandran Ashwin managed only 5 before being clean-bowled by Prasidh Krishna. The senior side was left reeling at 106 for 5 after 28 overs.
Second Innings: Jaiswal and Gill Lead the Recovery
The senior XI showed more resilience in their second outing, with Jaiswal and Gill leading the charge. Jaiswal remained unbeaten on 58, playing confidently against pace and spin alike. Gill looked more assured than in the first innings, finishing with a composed 42 not out.
Virat Kohli batted for an hour, adding a fluent 30 to his tally, including a stylish pull shot that required a change of bat. Pant attempted to counter the bowlers with aggression but was bowled again by Mukesh Kumar for 24, marking his second dismissal of the day.
The senior side ended their second innings on 339 for 8 after 75 overs, showing some improvement but leaving questions about their consistency.
While India’s senior side showed improvement in their second innings, the top-order collapses and struggles against movement will need addressing before the first Test. KL Rahul’s injury remains a concern, but the resilience of Jaiswal and Gill offers hope. The team will continue to fine-tune their skills over the weekend as the warm-up matches progress.
