India U19 Women’s Team Triumphs in T20 World Cup as Gongadi Trisha Steals the Show
India’s dominance in women’s cricket continued as they successfully defended their title, clinching the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2025 with a commanding nine-wicket victory over South Africa at Bayuemas Oval, Kuala Lumpur. The final was a showcase of India’s all-round superiority, with Gongadi Trisha delivering a match-winning performance, excelling both with the bat and ball.
Trisha’s incredible tournament came to a perfect conclusion as she picked up three wickets for 15 runs to help dismiss South Africa for just 82 runs in 20 overs. She then led the chase with a fluent 44 not out, ensuring that India chased down the target in just 11.2 overs to lift their second consecutive U19 Women’s T20 World Cup trophy.
South Africa Struggle Against India’s Spin Attack
The much-anticipated final saw South Africa opting to bat first after winning the toss. The decision looked promising initially, as Jemma Botha started with two crisp boundaries in the opening over. However, India struck early when Parunika Sisodia produced a beauty to dismiss Simone Lourens, bowling her with an angled delivery that nipped back into middle and leg stump.
The key moment came in the fourth over when Botha, South Africa’s star batter, fell to a stunning one-handed catch by wicketkeeper Kamalini G, off the bowling of Shabnam Shakil. The wicket sent shockwaves through the South African lineup, and from that point, India took complete control of the game.
The Proteas struggled to recover, losing Diara Ramlakan for a golden duck to Aayushi Shukla, before the Indian spinners tightened their grip on the match. Between the 4th and 10th overs, South Africa managed just 13 runs, failing to find the boundary on a slow pitch.
Captain Kayla Reyneke and Karabo Meso attempted to revive the innings, but their dismissals in quick succession only made matters worse. Mieke van Voorst fought hard with a brisk 23 off 18 balls, including three boundaries, but India’s spinners struck at crucial intervals.
Trisha played a pivotal role in the bowling department, taking three wickets, including the final breakthrough that saw South Africa bowled out for 82. Sisodia (2/6), Shukla (2/9), and tournament’s leading wicket-taker Vaishnavi Sharma (2/23) also contributed significantly to India’s disciplined bowling effort.
Gongadi Trisha Anchors the Chase with Confidence
With just 83 runs required for victory, India’s chase started with a moment of nervousness as Nthabiseng Nini found Trisha’s outside edge in the very first over. However, the ball flew just beyond wicketkeeper Karabo Meso, giving India an early boundary.
Trisha then took complete charge of the innings, punishing any loose deliveries with her elegant stroke play. Three boundaries in the fourth over showcased her aggressive intent as she maintained her tournament strike rate of 149.7.
India lost their only wicket when Kamalini G was dismissed for 8, caught brilliantly by Lourens in the deep. However, that was the only moment of joy for South Africa, as Trisha and Sanika Chalke took India home comfortably.
Trisha continued to dominate, striking eight boundaries in her innings and becoming the first player in U19 Women’s T20 World Cup history to score 300 runs in a single edition. Chalke provided solid support, hitting four boundaries in her unbeaten 26, before smashing the winning runs in the 12th over to seal a historic victory for India.
A Triumph for Indian Women’s Cricket
India’s victory in the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2025 further cements their position as a powerhouse in women’s cricket. Their dominance throughout the tournament was unmatched, with the team winning every match convincingly.
Trisha’s incredible all-round performance earned her the Player of the Final award and cemented her place as the tournament’s leading run-scorer. She finished with 309 runs at an average of 66.25 and a strike rate of 149.7, along with six wickets to her name.
Speaking after the match, Trisha expressed her excitement about the team’s achievement:
"Winning this tournament again means the world to us. It was a complete team effort, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute both with the bat and ball. We played fearless cricket, and I’m so proud of the entire team."
South Africa’s Encouraging Run Ends in Heartbreak
Despite the loss, South Africa’s journey in the tournament was commendable. Having failed to progress beyond the Super Six stage in the previous edition, their runners-up finish this time highlights their improvement.
Captain Kayla Reyneke acknowledged the effort of her team, saying:
"It’s disappointing to lose in the final, but we’ve come a long way as a team. We played some outstanding cricket throughout the tournament, and I’m proud of the girls. We’ll take this experience forward and come back stronger."
