MS Dhoni Returns as CSK Captain in IPL 2025 as 17-Year-Old Mumbai Star Set to Replace Injured Ruturaj Gaikwad
The Indian Premier League (IPL) never fails to surprise. Just when fans thought the 2025 season couldn't get more dramatic, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have found themselves in the headlines again. This time, it’s not only because MS Dhoni is returning as captain mid-season but also due to an unexpected twist a 17-year-old batting prodigy from Mumbai is set to replace the injured Ruturaj Gaikwad in the CSK squad.
The elbow injury to Ruturaj Gaikwad has left a gaping hole in CSK’s top order. The young opener, who was not just their leading batter but also their newly appointed captain, was ruled out of IPL 2025 following a fracture that requires time away from competitive cricket. While Gaikwad's absence is undoubtedly a big blow, it has paved the way for a new story the arrival of a teenage sensation from Mumbai, Arshin Kulkarni, who could be the next big thing for CSK.

MS Dhoni Returns as CSK Captain A Familiar Hero in Unfamiliar Times
It almost feels like destiny when MS Dhoni is asked to return to CSK captaincy under crisis. Having stepped down from captaincy to make way for the next generation, Dhoni is once again at the centre of CSK’s hopes. Coach Stephen Fleming confirmed in a press conference that Dhoni didn’t hesitate for even a moment when asked to take over after Gaikwad’s injury.
Dhoni, 43, might be at the twilight of his playing career, but his leadership skills remain unmatched. His calmness under pressure, tactical brilliance, and ability to read the game have often been the difference between victory and defeat for CSK.
As former India cricketer Murali Kartik rightly said during a Cricbuzz chat, “God writes different scripts for MS Dhoni. When CSK is in trouble, the story somehow finds its way back to Dhoni.”
Ruturaj Gaikwad's Emotional Message to Fans After IPL 2025 Exit
In a heartfelt video shared by CSK’s social media handles, Ruturaj Gaikwad expressed his disappointment over missing the rest of IPL 2025 but extended his full support to Dhoni and the team.
"Really gutted to be missing the future part of the IPL due to an unfortunate elbow injury. But thank you for your support until now," Gaikwad said.
He humorously referred to Dhoni as the "young wicketkeeper" leading the team and hoped his return as captain would turn things around for the struggling side.
"Definitely would have loved to take this team out of this situation, but some things are not controllable. I am looking forward to supporting the team from the dugout and hopefully, we have a great season ahead."
CSK's Surprise Move 17-Year-Old Arshin Kulkarni Set to Debut
While many expected seasoned players like Prithvi Shaw or even Sai Sudharsan to be approached by CSK as a replacement, the franchise has shown immense faith in young talent. According to reports from various domestic cricket circles, Mumbai’s Arshin Kulkarni, the 17-year-old sensation, is in line to replace Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Arshin has impressed selectors with his mature performances in the Under-19 circuit and the domestic T20 tournaments. A stylish right-handed batter known for his composure, footwork, and attacking range, Arshin represents the new generation of fearless Indian cricketers.
His recent exploits in the Cooch Behar Trophy and his impactful performances in the T20 Mumbai League caught the attention of CSK scouts. If given a chance, Arshin could become the youngest player to debut for CSK in IPL history.
CSK’s Situation in IPL 2025 A Test of Character
CSK have found themselves in a difficult position, languishing at the 9th spot on the points table with just one win from five matches. The team has struggled with batting collapses, a misfiring middle order, and underwhelming fielding performances.
Ruturaj Gaikwad's absence will hurt not just because of his captaincy but primarily because of his consistency as an opener. Gaikwad had been averaging 42.14 and 53 in IPL 2023 and 2024, respectively among the best in the tournament.
But if there's one thing that history has shown, it's never wise to count CSK out, especially with Dhoni leading them.
Can Dhoni Work His Magic Again
Dhoni’s record as captain speaks volumes five IPL titles, two Champions League trophies, and a win percentage of over 58% in his 226 matches as IPL captain. Even at 43, his presence on the field is magnetic. Whether it's his guidance to bowlers, lightning-quick stumpings, or calmness in crunch situations, Dhoni's return has injected hope into CSK’s campaign.
While fans may not expect vintage Dhoni fireworks with the bat every match, his leadership alone has the power to lift CSK from their current slump.
