Islamabad United Crush Lahore Qalandars in a Dominating Start to PSL 10
Summary
Islamabad United launched their PSL 10 campaign in style with a comprehensive victory over Lahore Qalandars at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. Powered by Jason Holder's sensational four-wicket haul and Colin Munro’s composed unbeaten half-century, United dismantled the defending champions Lahore Qalandars, chasing down 140 with ease to win by 8 wickets and 14 balls to spare.
Jason Holder and Colin Munro Power Islamabad United to a Dream Start in PSL 2025
The much-anticipated opening match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025 between Islamabad United and Lahore Qalandars lived up to its billing, though not in the way the defending champions would have hoped. Islamabad United stamped their authority right from the toss, and their clinical execution with both ball and bat highlighted why they remain one of the most consistent sides in PSL history.
United’s Decision to Bowl First Sets the Tone
Shadab Khan’s decision to bowl first after winning the toss proved to be a masterstroke on the bowling-friendly surface at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. Islamabad United’s bowlers, spearheaded by the experienced Jason Holder, immediately put the Lahore Qalandars under pressure.
The early dismissal of Fakhar Zaman for just one run in the second over set the tone for what was a batting collapse that the Qalandars never truly recovered from. Holder, using his clever variations and accuracy, ripped through Lahore's middle and lower order, finishing with figures of 4 for 26 in his 4 overs a performance that earned him widespread praise.
Shadab Khan was equally effective with the ball, taking three crucial wickets to ensure that Lahore could not recover even with Abdullah Shafique’s valiant effort.
Abdullah Shafique Fights a Lone Battle for Lahore Qalandars
While Lahore Qalandars’ innings never quite got going, Abdullah Shafique stood tall amidst the ruins. Batting at number three, Shafique scored an impressive 66 off 38 balls, showcasing his talent with six boundaries and three towering sixes.
However, apart from Daryl Mitchell’s 13 and Sikandar Raza’s 23, the rest of the Qalandars batting order failed to resist Islamabad’s disciplined bowling attack. Eventually, Lahore were bowled out for a modest 139 in just 19.2 overs a total that always looked below par against a strong United batting line-up.
Islamabad United’s Chase: Calm, Composed, and Clinical
Chasing a modest target of 140, Islamabad United did not get off to the best start. Debutant Andries Gous was dismissed early by Asif Afridi for just 4 runs, giving Lahore a glimmer of hope. But any hopes of a Qalandars comeback were soon quashed by the experienced Colin Munro.
Munro stitched together a crucial 55-run partnership with Sahibzada Farhan, who contributed 25 runs before falling to Haris Rauf. But it was Munro’s unflappable presence at the crease that guided United’s chase.
Teaming up with Salman Ali Agha, Munro built another crucial partnership worth 80 runs. The duo ensured that Islamabad coasted to victory without any further hiccups. Munro remained unbeaten on 59 off 42 balls, peppered with seven boundaries and a six, while Salman Ali Agha contributed a valuable 41* off 34 balls.
Holder's Bowling Heroics Seal the Game
While Munro’s calm batting deserves credit, it was undoubtedly Jason Holder’s four-wicket haul that laid the foundation for Islamabad United's thumping win. Holder's experience and ability to deliver in pressure situations came to the fore in Rawalpindi, highlighting once again why he is regarded as one of the most versatile all-rounders in the game today.
Holder not only broke partnerships at key moments but also ensured that Lahore's power-hitters like David Wiese and Shaheen Afridi couldn’t do any damage late in the innings.
What Went Wrong for Lahore Qalandars
The biggest concern for Lahore Qalandars coming out of this game is their fragile batting order beyond Abdullah Shafique. The early loss of Fakhar Zaman exposed their middle order, which failed to handle Islamabad's disciplined bowling attack.
Moreover, their bowlers, apart from Haris Rauf and Asif Afridi who claimed a wicket each, lacked the penetration needed to defend a low score. The absence of a substantial total left their bowling attack with little to defend.
Looking Ahead: Islamabad United Look Balanced, Lahore Qalandars Need Rethink
This opening match win sends a strong statement to the rest of the teams in PSL 2025 Islamabad United look like a well-oiled machine ready for another deep run in the tournament. With both batting and bowling departments firing in unison, Shadab Khan's side looks extremely balanced.
On the other hand, Lahore Qalandars will need to regroup quickly. With tougher matches ahead, their batting will need to fire collectively, and their bowling attack will have to find ways to pick early wickets to put pressure on the opposition.
