Jay Shah was elected as the International Cricket Council's (ICC) independent chair without opposition.
Without any opposition, Jay Shah was chosen to serve as the International Cricket Council's (ICC) next Independent Chair. On December 1, 2024, Shah—who has been the Chair of the Asian Cricket Council since January 2021 and the BCCI Honorary Secretary since October 2019—will take on this esteemed position.
Following the decision of incumbent Chair Greg Barclay to forego a third term, Shah was the only candidate for the position of chairman.
After winning the election, Shah declared his intention to expand cricket's appeal on a global scale, especially in light of the sport's impending participation in the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, which he sees as a critical window of opportunity for the game's development.
Shah said, "I am humbled by the nomination to the International Cricket Council as Chair."
"I pledge to collaborate closely with the ICC team and our member countries to further expand cricket's worldwide reach. At this pivotal moment, it is more crucial than ever to encourage the adoption of cutting-edge technology, strike a balance between the coexistence of many forms, and expand the reach of our major events into new international markets. Our objective is to increase cricket's appeal and participation more than in the past.
"To elevate the love for cricket worldwide, we must embrace fresh thinking and innovation in addition to building on the invaluable lessons learned," he continued. The fact that cricket will be competing in the Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028 marks a pivotal moment in the history of the sport, and I have no doubt that it will advance in ways never seen before.
With Shah's election, the ICC embarks on a new chapter in its efforts to broaden the game's appeal and maintain its advancement on the international scene.
