Delhi Capitals (DC) bounced back in style after a tough start in the Bengaluru leg of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025, securing a resounding six-wicket victory over Gujarat Giants (GG) on Tuesday. With this win, DC climbed to the top of the points table, displaying their resilience and dominance in the tournament.
After facing a setback in their previous match, DC showed remarkable composure and determination. Chasing a modest target of 128, the team reached the finish line in just 15.1 overs, thanks to a stellar performance from all-rounder Jess Jonassen and a powerful knock from opener Shafali Verma. Jonassen played a match-winning knock of 61* off 32 deliveries, while Verma set the foundation with a rapid 44 off 27 balls.
The bowling unit laid the groundwork for DC’s victory by restricting GG to 127/9 in 20 overs. The disciplined attack was led by Shikha Pandey, Marizanne Kapp, and Annabel Sutherland, each grabbing two wickets. Titas Sadhu and Jonassen also made crucial contributions with one wicket each, ensuring GG never gained momentum.
Jonassen, who was named Player of the Match, expressed her delight in the team’s all-around execution. “The team ticked all the boxes and executed our plans right from the start. We picked up four wickets in the powerplay, thanks to Marizanne (Kapp) and Shikha (Pandey), which set the tone for us. Our fielding was also on point, with some fantastic catches,” she said.
A strategic move saw Jonassen promoted to number three in the batting order, a decision that played a vital role in DC’s successful chase. Speaking about the change, she explained, “I had a conversation with our coach Jonathan Batty earlier in the day. He mentioned that if we lost an early wicket, the management was keen to send me in to inject some firepower and intent during the powerplay. I’m happy that I could contribute and help get the team across the line.”
Despite playing back-to-back matches in a short span, Jonassen emphasized the importance of staying focused. “It can work both ways. For us, the good thing is that we have a lot of experience in the dressing room. One bad outing doesn’t derail us. With a quick turnaround, you don’t have much time to dwell on mistakes you just keep looking forward,” she added.
With this emphatic win, DC now has six points from five matches, strengthening their position in the tournament. Their next challenge will be against Mumbai Indians (MI) on Friday at the iconic M Chinnaswamy Stadium, a highly anticipated clash that promises to be thrilling.
As WPL 2025 progresses, DC’s dominance continues to shine, with their latest performance against GG reinforcing their championship credentials.
