Jos Buttler Steps Down as England’s White-Ball Captain After Champions Trophy Exit
End of an Era as Buttler Resigns Following England’s Poor Run in ICC Events
Jos Buttler has announced his resignation as England’s white-ball captain following the team’s early exit from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The decision comes after England suffered consecutive group-stage defeats against Australia and Afghanistan, ending their campaign prematurely. Buttler will lead the team one last time in their final group-stage fixture against South Africa on Saturday in Karachi.
Speaking at a press conference, the 34-year-old expressed his disappointment, stating that stepping down was the best decision for both himself and the team. “It’s the right decision for me, it’s the right decision for the team, and hopefully, someone else can take the team back to where it needs to be,” Buttler said.
A Difficult Year for England’s White-Ball Team
England’s struggles in limited-overs cricket have been evident over the past year. After failing to defend their title at the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, where they managed only three wins in nine matches, their form further deteriorated in 2024 during the T20 World Cup, where they bowed out in the semi-finals against India.
With Brendon McCullum recently taking over as England’s white-ball coach, hopes were high for a turnaround. However, England’s dismal start to 2025 with nine defeats in ten matches further cemented the need for change. Buttler’s resignation signals a fresh beginning for the team as they seek to rebuild under a new leader.
Harry Brook Emerges as the Front-Runner
With Buttler stepping aside, the focus now shifts to his potential successor. Vice-captain Harry Brook is the leading candidate to take over the role, though no official confirmation has been made. McCullum acknowledged Buttler’s contributions while expressing his sadness over the decision. “We’ve all seen how much Jos has invested in this team. Winning a World Cup is no small feat, and that legacy will remain. He’s making an unselfish call, and we respect that,” McCullum said.
Buttler Reflects on His Journey as Captain
Despite the disappointment, Buttler remains proud of his tenure. Taking over from Eoin Morgan in 2022, he led England to T20 World Cup glory in Australia later that year. However, England’s performances in major ICC tournaments since then have fallen short of expectations.
When asked if stepping down was a relief, Buttler dismissed the notion, emphasizing that leading England was an “immense honour.” He added, “I’m sad about it, but I know it’s the right call. Now, I want to get back to enjoying my cricket.”
England’s Future in White-Ball Cricket
With another ICC event ending in disappointment, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) will have tough decisions to make regarding the team’s direction. While Buttler will continue to play for England, his successor will need to instill confidence and redefine the team’s approach in upcoming tournaments.
As England prepare for their final match against South Africa, all eyes will be on the leadership transition. Buttler’s resignation marks the end of an era, and English cricket now enters a new phase with hopes of a revival under fresh leadership.
