On Thursday, GMR Group and JSW Group said that the management of the Delhi Capitals IPL (Men) and Delhi Capitals WPL (Women) cricket teams would be divided between the two owning groups on a two-year rotating basis. The calculated action intends to maximize team-wide operational effectiveness under the Delhi Capitals franchise's ownership.
Under the terms of the agreement, JSW Sports will oversee the Delhi Capitals Women's team's operations while GMR Group will manage the team's cricket activities for the following two years. When JSW Sports takes over the Men's team's operations in 2027, the roles will be reversed. However, the management group of the Delhi Capitals will still be in charge of the franchise's business affairs.
The senior leadership of both organizations will work together to decide on important choices such as player releases, auctions, captaincy, and team retention. These decisions will be taken by the Delhi Capitals board.
GMR Group, along with the "Delhi Daredevils" club, was one of the original IPL franchisees in 2008. After rebranding the team as the Delhi Capitals, JSW Sports and GMR Group formed a 50:50 agreement in 2018 to co-own the IPL franchise. The Delhi Capitals have played in every competition since 2008; in the first two seasons, they made it to the semifinals, and they have qualified for the playoffs numerous additional times. The team finished the season as second runners-up in 2019, which was a record-breaking performance. In 2020, the Capitals achieved even more success, qualifying for the IPL final for the first time in the franchise’s history.
The women's squad, which was bought in 2023, has advanced to the championship game in each of the previous two Women's Premier League seasons.
Apart from the Indian Men's and Women's IPL teams, GMR Group will still manage the Dubai Capitals in the ILT20 competition, while JSW Sports will oversee the Pretoria Capitals in the SA20 South African competition.
