The Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow witnessed a high-octane contest as Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) edged past Mumbai Indians (MI) by 12 runs in Match 16 of IPL 2025. LSG, defending a challenging total of 203, held their nerve in the death overs despite a late fightback from the five-time champions.
LSG ride on Marsh, Markram to set 203
LSG got off to a flying start thanks to the aggressive intent of Mitchell Marsh, who smashed 60 off just 31 deliveries, including 9 fours and 3 sixes. Aiden Markram, steady at the other end, brought control and class with his 53 from 38 balls. The duo laid the platform for a total that would prove difficult to chase on a surface that aided both pace and spin.
Though Nicholas Pooran chipped in with a quickfire 12, it was David Miller and Ayush Badoni who applied the finishing touches, scoring 27 and 30 respectively. Shardul Thakur and Abdul Samad added valuable lower-order runs that helped LSG cross the 200 mark. For Mumbai, it was Hardik Pandya who stood out with the ball, picking up 4 wickets for 36 runs and putting a check on LSG’s acceleration in the death overs.
MI falter despite Suryakumar and Naman’s fireworks
In reply, MI suffered early blows as Will Jacks and Ryan Rickelton were dismissed cheaply, leaving the onus on the middle order. Naman Dhir, one of the emerging names of this season, played a blistering knock of 46 off 24 balls. But it was Suryakumar Yadav who took center stage with a magnificent 67 off 43, showcasing his signature flair and innovative strokeplay.
Despite the brilliance of Surya, MI were always behind the required run rate. Hardik Pandya played a cameo of 28* off 16, but the equation became too steep in the final over. Avesh Khan, tasked with defending the total, kept his cool and ensured LSG walked away with two points, as MI finished with 191/5 in their 20 overs.
Bowling brilliance from LSG
Avesh Khan’s calmness at the death, Akash Deep’s early breakthrough, and Digvesh Rathi’s tight spell were key to LSG’s defensive effort. Ravi Bishnoi was economical as well, bowling a tidy spell under pressure and keeping MI from gaining momentum in the middle overs.
Despite the flat nature of the pitch, LSG’s bowlers maintained discipline and varied their pace cleverly, preventing MI from launching a full assault in the last five overs.
What this win means for LSG
This was a statement win for LSG, especially after their underwhelming performance against Punjab Kings. They now climb up the IPL 2025 points table, building confidence with each outing. With Akash Deep back and Avesh Khan finding his rhythm, their bowling looks more balanced.
For Mumbai, the inconsistency continues. While the absence of Rohit Sharma due to injury was a big blow, the team still had enough firepower to chase the target. Suryakumar’s form is a huge plus, but MI will need better starts and a more potent powerplay strategy moving forward.
Player of the Match: Mitchell Marsh
For his attacking half-century and setting the tempo for LSG’s innings, Marsh was the clear standout. His strike rate of 193.55 gave the team early momentum that MI never fully recovered from.
