Marco Jansen’s Mindset Powers SA20 Success
Marco Jansen has fast become one of the most dominant forces in the Betway SA20, and his recent accolades prove just that. The Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC) allrounder capped off a stellar 2025 campaign by claiming both Player of the Season and Bowler of the Season at the awards ceremony in Johannesburg.
Just a year after being named the Rising Star, Jansen has firmly established himself as one of South Africa’s brightest cricketing talents. Though SEC fell short of a historic third consecutive SA20 title, Jansen’s performances with both bat and ball were a major highlight of the tournament.
A Season to Remember
Jansen’s consistency was remarkable throughout the tournament. He finished as the leading wicket-taker, grabbing 19 scalps at an average of 18.42, while also contributing 204 runs at a strike rate of 125.1. His ability to deliver under pressure made him one of SA20’s standout players.
“Yeah, obviously we didn't win the final, but for me personally, I still feel really well about my game,” Jansen shared with Betway SA20. “I think the performances I gave this season were a lot more consistent.”
Jansen’s efforts were even more impressive considering the 12-month conditioning program he underwent, which kept him out of international action during the winter. Designed to enhance his strength and endurance, the program helped him maintain peak performance throughout the tournament.
Dominating the Powerplay
One of Jansen’s biggest strengths in SA20 2025 was his effectiveness with the new ball. His ability to strike in the Powerplay set the tone for SEC’s bowling attack, often putting opposition teams under immediate pressure.
“I’m really pleased with having struck a lot in the Powerplay, which is my goal,” he said. “That’s probably the best chance to get a wicket because the ball is swinging, the wicket is fresh, and the batters are just getting in.”
Standing at 2.06m, Jansen generates steep bounce and movement, making life difficult for batters early in the innings. His aggressive mindset also plays a crucial role in his approach.
“For me, I try and take a wicket every single ball,” he explained. “If the ball swings, I go for full-stump lines. If it nips off the seam, I bowl a bit straighter. It’s all about adapting quickly.”
Mentality of a Champion
Despite his growing collection of awards, Jansen remains grounded. His dedication to improvement and willingness to adapt make him a player to watch not just in SA20, but on the international stage as well.
“All my trophies are on my TV cabinet at the moment,” he joked. “But it’s just about putting in the hard work and continuing to improve every season.”
With SA20 2025 now behind him, Jansen will be eager to carry his red-hot form into upcoming international assignments. If his performances this season are anything to go by, the cricketing world is set to witness even greater things from the South African allrounder.
