Mohammad Nabi Eyes Extended Afghanistan Career Beyond Champions Trophy

Afghanistan’s veteran all-rounder remains undecided on retirement

Mohammad Nabi, the last remaining player from Afghanistan’s first-ever ODI squad, is still not ready to call time on his illustrious international career. At 40 years old, the legendary all-rounder continues to shine on the global stage, most recently helping Fortune Barishal claim the Bangladesh Premier League 2025 title. Now, as he prepares for the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025, Nabi remains uncertain if this will be his final international tournament.

“I’m still thinking about my future," said Nabi. "These might not be my last ODIs. I will probably play fewer games and give chances to younger players to build experience, but it all depends on my fitness.”

With Afghanistan making its Champions Trophy debut, Nabi is eager to contribute and believes the team’s preparations have been strong. He emphasized his match readiness, having played in BPL 2025 and completing a few training sessions with the national squad in Abu Dhabi.

“Winning the BPL gave me confidence, especially coming from a tough position in the final. My performances with both bat and ball helped finish games for my team, which has boosted my self-belief heading into the Champions Trophy.”

Spin Strength: Afghanistan’s Key Weapon

Afghanistan boasts one of the most formidable spin attacks in world cricket, with Nabi, Rashid Khan, and young sensation Nangialai Kharoti forming a lethal trio. The 20-year-old Kharoti has already made an impression with his performances against South Africa and Ireland in Sharjah, and Nabi is hopeful that he will make a big impact in the Champions Trophy.

“Kharoti is a great addition to the squad. He’s been bowling brilliantly over the last two years and is also a fantastic fielder. Hopefully, he can pick up wickets and help the team succeed.”

Nabi also heaped praise on Rashid Khan, who recently became the highest wicket-taker in T20I cricket, surpassing Dwayne Bravo.

“Rashid is the best in the world. Inshallah, he will reach 1000 wickets soon! He’s young, energetic, and always hungry for wickets. He is aggressive on the field and brings extra energy to the team. Off the field, he’s just a normal guy who enjoys every moment. He also plays a big role in making younger players comfortable in the dressing room.”

Afghanistan’s Champions Trophy Challenge

Afghanistan has been drawn into a tough Group B alongside Australia, South Africa, and England, but after reaching the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2024, the team is determined to make a statement in its maiden Champions Trophy appearance.

“This is a big opportunity for Afghanistan cricket," Nabi stated. "We have performed well in ICC events recently, and this is another chance to prove ourselves against the world’s best teams.”

A Special Dream: Playing with His Son for Afghanistan

Beyond his own cricketing future, Nabi has another dream to play international cricket alongside his son, Hassan Eisakhil. The 18-year-old prodigy has already shown immense potential, scoring a century and a 95 in his last two games.

"It’s my dream to share the field with him in an Afghanistan jersey," Nabi revealed. "He’s working hard and improving every day. I always tell him that 50 or 60 isn’t enough if you want to be a top player, you need to score 100+ runs consistently. He listens, works hard, and I believe he has a bright future.”

As Afghanistan gears up for the Champions Trophy 2025, Mohammad Nabi’s journey continues, with his vast experience and leadership still playing a crucial role. Whether this tournament marks the end of his international career or not, one thing is certain his legacy in Afghan cricket is already etched in history.
