MS Dhoni Fan Ramesh Shanmugam Strikes Gold Twice at Khelo India Para Games 2025
Para-athlete from Tamil Nadu inspired by 'Thala' MS Dhoni, aims for Paralympic glory
New Delhi, March 22, 2025 – “Once MS Dhoni retires, I will stop watching cricket,” says Ramesh Shanmugam with a smile, moments after clinching gold in the Men’s 800m T53/T54 event at the ongoing Khelo India Para Games 2025 in New Delhi. A passionate follower of the legendary Indian cricketer, Shanmugam is not just a Dhoni devotee he is forging his own legacy in Indian para athletics.
The 30-year-old athlete from Mannathampatty, a small village in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruchirappalli district, continues to rise through the ranks in wheelchair racing. His love for cricket, particularly MS Dhoni’s composure and discipline, has been a guiding force in his own sporting journey.
From Cricket Enthusiast to Para Athletics Star
Before a tragic accident at the age of eight altered the course of his life, Shanmugam was a swift runner and a wicketkeeper traits that perhaps foreshadowed his future as a top-tier wheelchair racer. A devastating collision with a lorry left him without both legs, but not without determination.
“I used to play cricket back in the day. I used to run fast and also was a wicketkeeper. I have been to several matches because I love watching cricket, especially our Thala MS Dhoni,” Shanmugam told SAI Media.
Dhoni’s influence runs deep. “He taught me to stay calm, be composed, and always disciplined, no matter the situation. That mindset has helped me immensely,” he added.
Gold Rush in New Delhi
At the Khelo India Para Games 2025, Shanmugam showcased his incredible speed and stamina by winning gold medals in both the 100m and 800m T53/54 men’s events. These victories build upon an already successful year, where he claimed two golds and a silver at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix earlier.
“I feel I am on the right track in my career now. The support from Sports Authority of India and the Ministry of Youth and Sports Affairs has been crucial. The facilities at KIPG are top-notch from accommodation to travel and food, everything has been well arranged,” he shared.
Rising from Adversity
Born into a humble farming family, Shanmugam’s journey is one of sheer resilience. The aftermath of his accident presented daunting physical and financial challenges. Yet, with support from local authorities and the government, he resumed his education and pursued a B.Sc. in Bio Chemistry from a college in Trichy.
“I’ve faced many hardships. But I always felt I needed to achieve something, to prove myself. That desire keeps me going. I can’t stop,” he said with quiet determination.
His entry into sports began with para basketball, where he represented India in eight international events. But due to lack of resources and support in the sport, Shanmugam made a shift to para athletics two years ago leveraging his natural speed and endurance honed on the basketball court.
“In athletics, you are always in motion. Racing in a wheelchair keeps you pumped. That’s the energy I thrive on,” he explained.
Support from Family and a Dream for the Nation
Shanmugam’s success is also backed by a strong personal support system. His wife, who works in a private firm, and his parents have been his pillars of strength throughout his journey.
“Last year in Khelo India Para Games, I won bronze. This time, I’ve won two gold medals. My family is proud of how far I’ve come. Their belief in me means everything. Without them, I wouldn’t have won a single medal,” he said emotionally.
With growing confidence and accolades, Shanmugam now sets his eyes on the biggest stage in para sports the Paralympics.
“My dream is to be selected for the Paralympics and win gold for my country. That would be the proudest moment of my life,” he signed off, his eyes already on the next finish line.
