Clinical Finish Powers Mumbai Indians to a Four-Wicket Win Over Sunrisers Hyderabad
On a warm Thursday evening at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai Indians added another nail-biter to their collection, chasing down 162 to defeat Sunrisers Hyderabad by four wickets in Match 33 of the IPL 2025. The result, as much about smart strategy as individual brilliance, showcased the batting depth of the five-time champions and highlighted crucial tactical missteps from a spirited but outplayed Sunrisers side.
Sunrisers Hyderabad, having lost the toss and being asked to bat first, managed a modest 162/5 in their 20 overs. Despite solid contributions from Abhishek Sharma and Heinrich Klaasen, the innings never truly exploded. On a surface known for producing big totals, a total below 170 always felt light against a Mumbai line-up bursting with explosive hitters.
Abhishek and Klaasen Build, But MI Bowlers Restrict in the Middle
Abhishek Sharma stood tall as the batting mainstay for SRH, scoring a fluent 40 off 28 deliveries with a mix of finesse and power. Partnering with Travis Head, he stitched a decent opening stand, but the left-hander fell to Hardik Pandya just when he looked set for a bigger score. Head, who has been a game-changer for SRH in the past, couldn’t quite convert his start and was dismissed for 28 by Will Jacks.
The defining spell came from Jasprit Bumrah and Will Jacks. Bumrah’s economy and yorker precision at the death restricted Klaasen, despite the South African’s brisk 37 off 28. Bumrah finished with 1/21, while Jacks picked up two crucial wickets, conceding just 14 in his three overs an effort that turned the screws on Sunrisers' middle-order.
The back end of SRH’s innings lacked acceleration. Though Aniket Verma added 18 not out and Cummins chipped in with a run-a-ball 8, Mumbai’s bowlers especially Boult and Hardik ensured the total remained chaseable.
MI Batting Depth Shines Through in Tight Chase
In reply, Mumbai’s chase got off to a brisk start, courtesy of Ryan Rickelton, who smashed a 23-ball 31. Rohit Sharma, surprisingly not part of the starting XI, made a brief appearance as an Impact Player and scored 26 off 16, but was undone by Pat Cummins, who briefly swung momentum back towards the Sunrisers.
Will Jacks once again showed why he’s become a key cog in MI’s lineup, playing a fearless knock of 36 off 26 balls before Cummins struck again. But it was Suryakumar Yadav’s 15-ball 26 full of ramps, flicks, and fearless improvisation that truly demoralized SRH’s bowlers.
With wickets falling at the other end, Tilak Varma held the innings together with an unbeaten 21 off 17. His mature knock ensured MI did not panic during the pressure moments. The final push came in the 18th over when MI needed just four runs, and Tilak nudged it calmly for the win, despite a brief hiccup when Naman Dhir and Hardik Pandya fell on successive deliveries.
Captain Cummins’ Efforts in Vain
Pat Cummins bowled his heart out, claiming three wickets including the big scalps of Rohit, Jacks, and Suryakumar but lacked support from the rest of the attack. Eshan Malinga picked up two wickets late in the innings, but SRH’s inability to control the flow of runs through the middle overs cost them dearly.
The absence of consistent line and length, coupled with misfields at crucial junctures, allowed MI’s batters to maintain a steady scoring rate without taking undue risks.
Tactical Insight and Takeaways
Mumbai’s strategy to chase under lights paid off, but more impressive was their management of match situations. Bumrah and Jacks were held back tactically and used in short but effective bursts, especially around the 12-18 over mark where SRH had hoped to accelerate.
Sunrisers, meanwhile, will need to reevaluate their batting order and death bowling combinations. With Ishan Kishan out of touch and Head not converting starts, pressure continues to build on Klaasen to rescue innings. The lack of impact from veterans like Harshal Patel and Shami also remains a growing concern.
