The Women's Premier League (WPL) 2025 witnessed another thrilling encounter as Mumbai Indians Women (MIW) secured a commanding 5-wicket victory over Gujarat Giants Women (GGTW) at Kotambi Stadium, Vadodara. Opting to bowl first after winning the toss, MIW's bowling attack, led by Nat Sciver-Brunt and Hayley Matthews, dismantled GGTW's batting lineup, restricting them to just 120 runs in 20 overs.

GGTW Struggle with the Bat

GGTW's innings started on a shaky note, with skipper Beth Mooney falling early to Nat Sciver-Brunt after scoring just 1 run off 3 balls. Laura Wolvaardt (4 off 7) also failed to make an impact, succumbing to Shabnim Ismail. A middle-order resistance from Harleen Deol (32 off 31) and Deandra Dottin (7 off 6) gave GGTW some momentum, but regular wickets kept them on the back foot.

All-rounder Dayalan Hemalatha looked promising with 9 off 11, while Ashleigh Gardner contributed 10 off 10 before falling to Sciver-Brunt. However, it was MIW’s Hayley Matthews (4-0-16-3) and Amelia Kerr (4-0-22-2) who turned the game in MIW’s favor, cleaning up the lower order efficiently. Kashvee Gautam (20 off 15) and Priya Mishra (2 off 7) added some late runs, but GGTW was eventually bowled out for 120 in 20 overs.

MIW’s Confident Chase

Chasing a modest total, MIW got off to a steady start with Hayley Matthews (17 off 19) and Yastika Bhatia (8 off 10). However, Tanuja Kanwar and Priya Mishra struck early, dismissing both openers within the first 7 overs.

Nat Sciver-Brunt then took charge, playing a sensational knock of 57 off 39 balls, striking at 146.15 SR. She dominated the GGTW bowlers with 10 fours and 1 six, ensuring MIW remained ahead in the chase. Amelia Kerr (19 off 20) and Harmanpreet Kaur (4 off 2) fell in quick succession, but Sajeevan Sajana (10 off 6) and G Kamalini (4 off 1) ensured MIW crossed the finish line comfortably in 16.1 overs with 5 wickets in hand.

GGTW’s Bowling Efforts in Vain

Despite defending a below-par total, GGTW’s bowlers fought hard. Priya Mishra (4-0-40-2) picked up crucial wickets, while Kashvee Gautam (3-0-15-2) was economical and effective. However, the target was too low to defend against MIW’s strong batting lineup.

Match Summary

The match was a testament to MIW’s balanced squad, with Sciver-Brunt leading the way both with bat and ball. GGTW, on the other hand, will need to regroup after another disappointing performance. With this win, MIW strengthens its position in WPL 2025, while GGTW must bounce back quickly to stay in contention.
