Pakistan’s men’s cricket team is set to embark on a challenging tour of South Africa from December 10, 2024, to January 7, 2025. The series comprises three T20Is, three ODIs, and two Tests, offering Pakistan a golden opportunity to fine-tune their strategy and test their depth across formats. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced well-balanced squads for all three formats, adhering to what Aqib Javed, interim white-ball head coach and member of the selection committee, termed a “horses for courses policy.”
With a blend of experience and emerging talent, the squads promise to deliver competitive cricket in South African conditions. Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Shah Afridi are among the marquee players, while fresh faces like Khurram Shahzad and Sufyan Moqim have been included to inject vitality and promise.
Selection Strategy: Horses for Courses
Aqib Javed emphasized the strategic approach to squad selection, which prioritized balance and adaptability. “We have adopted a horses for courses policy to ensure all three squads are well-balanced and capable of performing strongly in South Africa,” said Javed. He underscored the significance of preparing for different formats with specialized players, particularly given the diverse conditions in Durban, Centurion, and Cape Town.
Javed highlighted two key priorities:
Momentum in ODIs: With the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in sight, Pakistan aims to solidify their ODI unit, maintaining consistency in selection while integrating fresh talent.
Blending Experience and Youth in T20Is: The T20I squad is designed to offer a mix of experienced campaigners like Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan with emerging stars like Saim Ayub and Sufyan Moqim, ensuring a robust team ready to face dynamic challenges.
Test Squad: Reinforced with Specialists
The Test squad reflects a commitment to assembling a lineup that can thrive in pace-friendly South African conditions. Shan Masood will lead the side, with Saud Shakeel serving as his deputy. The inclusion of Mohammad Abbas, a seasoned Test bowler returning after stellar performances in domestic cricket, underscores Pakistan’s focus on precision and discipline.
Fast bowler Naseem Shah, who missed the last two Tests against England, returns to bolster the pace attack, joining Mohammad Abbas, Mir Hamza, and Khurram Shahzad. The spin department will rely on Noman Ali as the sole specialist spinner, given the expected seam-friendly pitches.
Aqib Javed elaborated on the tough decision to exclude Sajid Khan, who performed admirably against England. “Leaving out Sajid Khan, despite his stellar performances, was extremely difficult. However, considering the conditions and opposition, we opted for Abbas, whose ability to exploit seam-friendly surfaces will be invaluable.”
Tests Squad: Shan Masood (captain), Saud Shakeel (vice-captain), Aamir Jamal, Abdullah Shafique, Babar Azam, Haseebullah (wk), Kamran Ghulam, Khurram Shahzad, Mir Hamza, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Naseem Shah, Noman Ali, Saim Ayub and Salman Ali Agha

The ODI squad, captained by Mohammad Rizwan, showcases continuity and strategic inclusions. Shaheen Shah Afridi’s return is a welcome boost, with the management carefully managing his workload to ensure peak fitness for the Champions Trophy. Emerging players like Sufyan Moqim, who impressed with his left-arm wrist spin, have been included, signaling Pakistan’s intent to foster young talent.
With the ODI leg serving as a critical preparatory phase for the Champions Trophy, the selection committee has retained experienced performers while giving opportunities to promising youngsters.

The inclusion of Sufyan Moqim, Abrar Ahmed, and Omair Bin Yousuf adds versatility to the squad. Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf will lead the pace attack, offering explosive options for the shortest format.
Javed explained the rationale behind the T20I squad, emphasizing the importance of developing depth while maintaining competitiveness. “The T20I series provides a platform to blend experience with emerging talent. Tour Schedule: High-Intensity Cricket Ahead
The tour kicks off with the T20I series, followed by ODIs and concludes with the highly anticipated Test matches. Pakistan will play in some of South Africa’s most iconic venues, testing their adaptability and resilience.
Challenges and Opportunities
The South Africa tour poses unique challenges for Pakistan. The pitches are expected to favor fast bowlers, making adaptability crucial. For batters, the challenge lies in tackling South Africa’s pace attack, which thrives in home conditions.
However, this also presents opportunities for Pakistan’s pace-heavy lineup to dominate. Aqib Javed expressed confidence in his team’s ability to adapt and excel. “The Test series will be highly competitive, but we are confident in our team’s ability to secure a historic series win.”
A Crucial Test of Pakistan’s Cricketing Depth
As Pakistan heads to South Africa, the tour stands as a critical benchmark for their preparations for global tournaments. With carefully selected squads and a focused approach, Pakistan is poised to make their mark against a formidable South African side.
From the T20Is in Durban to the Tests in Cape Town, the cricketing world will be keenly watching as Pakistan takes on this daunting challenge.
