Pakistan Women defeated Sri Lanka Women by 31 runs in their second Group A match of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024, held at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. After electing to bat first, Pakistan posted a modest total of 116 all out in 20 overs, with notable contributions from Fatima Sana Khan (30 off 20) and Nida Dar (23 off 22). Sri Lanka's bowling attack, led by Chamari Athapaththu and Sugandika Kumari, both of whom claimed three wickets, kept Pakistan's scoring in check throughout the innings.
In response, Sri Lanka Women struggled against a disciplined Pakistani bowling performance and could only manage 85 for 9 in their 20 overs. Sadia Iqbal was the star bowler for Pakistan, taking 3 wickets for just 17 runs in her four-over spell, while Fatima Sana also chipped in with two wickets. Nilakshi de Silva was the top scorer for Sri Lanka with 22 runs, but the team failed to build any meaningful partnerships to chase down the target.
The key turning point of the match came during the middle overs of the Sri Lankan innings, where Pakistan took crucial wickets, leaving Sri Lanka's lower order with too much to do. Pakistan's bowlers maintained consistent pressure, which ultimately led to their comfortable victory by a 31-run margin.
This win puts Pakistan Women in a strong position in Group A, while Sri Lanka Women will need to regroup and improve their performance in the upcoming matches to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
