Player of the Match: Prabhsimran Singh
Punjab Kings produced a complete performance with both bat and ball to clinch a commanding 37-run victory over Lucknow Super Giants in Match 54 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The match, held at the scenic Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala, saw a run-fest where Prabhsimran Singh's explosive knock stood out as the defining highlight.
Punjab Kings Batting Blitz Anchored by Prabhsimran Singh
Electing to bowl first after winning the toss, Lucknow Super Giants were immediately put under pressure by Punjab’s aggressive batting. While Priyansh Arya fell early, it was Prabhsimran Singh who lit up Dharamsala with a blistering 91 off 48 balls, smashing 14 boundaries and six massive sixes in an innings that oozed dominance and timing. His clean striking set the tempo for Punjab’s innings, which never looked back after the Powerplay.
Josh Inglis chipped in with a quick 30 off 14 balls, while captain Shreyas Iyer controlled the middle overs with a fluent 45. Nehal Wadhera and Shashank Singh continued the assault in the final overs, with Shashank smashing a rapid 33* off just 15 balls. A final flourish from Marcus Stoinis, who contributed 15* off five deliveries, helped Punjab finish with a mammoth 236/5 in 20 overs.
Despite a couple of wickets from Digvesh Rathi and Akash Maharaj Singh, LSG’s bowling looked flat throughout. The inexperience in their bowling attack was exposed as the bowlers struggled with both line and length under pressure. The pace trio of Avesh Khan, Mayank Yadav, and Akash Singh collectively conceded over 180 runs, with only Rathi offering some control.
Lucknow Super Giants Falter in Steep Chase
Chasing a daunting 237, LSG needed an electric start, but what they got instead was a nightmare. Arshdeep Singh removed both Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh in quick succession, and Pooran, their in-form batter, fell soon after to a searing Arshdeep inswinger.
While Rishabh Pant tried to rebuild with an 18-run cameo, it was Ayush Badoni and Abdul Samad who gave LSG a glimmer of hope in the middle overs. Samad’s 45 off 24 was explosive, laced with four boundaries and two sixes. Ayush Badoni followed up with a brisk 74, threatening to tilt the balance late in the chase.
However, the target proved too steep. After Samad's dismissal by Marco Jansen and Badoni falling late in the innings, LSG’s hopes diminished. Avesh Khan and Prince Yadav swung their bats but could only drag the total to 199/7, still 37 runs short.
Bowling Discipline and Death Overs Brilliance
Punjab’s bowling unit, often criticized this season for being expensive in the death, showed remarkable discipline. Arshdeep Singh led from the front with an incisive spell of 3/16, including key wickets in the Powerplay. Marco Jansen and Azmatullah Omarzai maintained pressure in the middle overs, while Chahal’s wrist spin helped tighten the screws, picking up Badoni at a crucial juncture.
The management’s decision to back Vijaykumar Vyshak in the death proved effective despite a few erratic overs, as he kept the LSG lower order in check. Punjab’s collective bowling effort ensured their batting heroics didn’t go in vain.
Statement Win at a Crucial Juncture
This win is more than just two points for Punjab Kings. It was a statement of their playoff ambitions and their ability to fire in all departments. With both the top and middle order functioning cohesively and the bowlers executing plans well, this performance will serve as a confidence booster going into the business end of the tournament.
For Lucknow, the inconsistency continues. Despite moments of brilliance from Ayush Badoni and Samad, the absence of a solid top-order foundation and lack of penetration with the ball hurt their campaign once again.
