SA20 and SACA Unveil Schools SA20 Scholarship Programme to Nurture Young Cricket Talent
In a groundbreaking move for South African cricket, SA20 and the South African Cricketers' Association (SACA) have launched the inaugural Schools SA20 Scholarship Programme, a significant step towards developing young cricketing talent in the country. As part of this initiative, full scholarships will be awarded to outstanding young cricketers participating in the Schools SA20 competition, ensuring that financial barriers do not stand in the way of promising talent reaching their full potential.
This scholarship, designed for Grade 7 boys and girls, will cover annual school fees, hostel costs (if applicable), and additional expenses, providing recipients with an unparalleled opportunity to enhance their cricketing skills while receiving a top-tier education.
Graeme Smith: A Commitment to Youth Cricket Development
SA20 Commissioner Graeme Smith expressed his enthusiasm about the programme, emphasizing SA20’s commitment to supporting young athletes.
“We are proud to partner with SACA to launch this groundbreaking scholarship programme,” Smith stated. “This initiative is a key part of our mission to develop young cricket talent in South Africa and provide them with the support they need to chase their dreams.”
Holistic Development Beyond the Field
The scholarship initiative is not just about financial support it is designed to help young cricketers grow both on and off the field. Recipients will also have access to a dedicated SACA Player Development Manager (PDM), who will mentor and guide them in their cricketing journey. This includes career planning, mental conditioning, and skill development, ensuring they receive the best possible support as they progress in their sporting careers.
SACA CEO Andrew Breetzke lauded SA20’s involvement in school cricket, highlighting its long-term benefits.

The Schools SA20 Competition: A Platform for Future Stars
Launched in September 2024 in collaboration with Cricket South Africa (CSA), the Schools SA20 competition has quickly become a premier platform for discovering young talent in the U19 category. With over 370 boys’ school teams and 200 girls’ school teams participating, more than 1,000 matches have been played across the country, highlighting the immense interest and competition at the grassroots level.
The tournament will culminate in the Final Showdown from March 12-15 in Pretoria, where the top boys’ and girls’ teams will compete for the prestigious Schools SA20 Championship title. Spectators can witness the future stars of South African cricket in action at the Tuks Oval, where the final match on March 15 promises to be an exciting, family-friendly event featuring live music, food stalls, and thrilling cricket.
Mentorship from Cricket Legends and Live Broadcasts
As part of the scholarship programme, young cricketers will not only compete in a high-stakes tournament but also receive valuable mentorship from legendary players. Special batting, bowling, and fielding masterclasses will be conducted by former South African greats, including AB de Villiers, Dinesha Devnarain, and Kruger van Wyk. Additionally, SACA will conduct educational integrity sessions covering anti-corruption and anti-doping awareness to help young cricketers navigate the professional sports landscape.
The Final Showdown matches will be televised live on SuperSport Schools, DStv Channel 216, and SABC Plus, with the girls’ final airing on DStv Channel 209, ensuring nationwide visibility for these talented youngsters.
