SEC March into Qualifier 2, JSK Knocked Out of SA20
The Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC) continue their charge towards a historic third consecutive SA20 title after eliminating Joburg Super Kings (JSK) with a dominant 32-run victory in the Eliminator at Centurion. The defending champions held their nerve in a high-pressure contest and will now take on Paarl Royals (PR) in Qualifier 2, keeping their hopes of an unprecedented hat-trick of championships alive.
The match was a rollercoaster of momentum shifts, with SEC captain Aiden Markram leading from the front, delivering a composed 62 off 40 balls, while Marco Jansen's late fireworks helped SEC post a formidable 184/6. The JSK chase never took off, with key wickets falling at crucial moments as they finished at 152/7, bowing out of the tournament.
Markram, Jansen Shine as SEC Post 184/6
Batting first, SEC made a solid start, but the innings truly took off when Markram anchored the middle overs and accelerated in the death. At 149/5 with just two overs remaining, the game was delicately poised. Enter Jansen, who joined his captain in a destructive assault on Lutho Sipamla.
In an explosive penultimate over, Sipamla leaked 29 runs, the most expensive over in SA20 history, conceding three sixes, two boundaries, and even a no-ball. His final figures of 0/72 set a new unwanted record, ensuring SEC had the upper hand going into the second innings.
Markram’s composed innings alongside Jansen’s brutal hitting (23 off 12 balls) ensured SEC finished with a challenging total of 184/6—one that would require a special effort from JSK to chase down.
JSK Falter as Overton, Dawson Seal SEC’s Victory
JSK began their chase with intent, keeping up with the required rate at 91/3 after 12 overs. With Jonny Bairstow and Wihan Lubbe at the crease, they seemed well-placed to mount a serious challenge, needing 94 off 48 balls.
However, Markram took a gamble, giving an extra over to Craig Overton, a decision that proved to be the turning point. Overton bowled a stunning double-wicket maiden, removing both Lubbe and Moeen Ali, derailing JSK’s momentum completely.
Bairstow, the last remaining hope for JSK, fought back bravely, playing some inventive strokes to take on Liam Dawson. But his aggressive approach backfired as Dawson bowled him out with a well-flighted delivery. With Bairstow dismissed for 37 off 17 balls, JSK’s hopes collapsed, and they eventually fell 32 runs short.
Markram Praises Team’s All-Round Performance
Speaking after the match, Markram lauded his team’s effort, particularly the bowlers who executed their plans to perfection.
“Lot of credit to the boys. We haven't put together a complete game before this, but tonight was the closest we got. The bowlers were brilliant, and we adapted well under lights. The pitch had some variation, and we knew we had to time our spinners effectively,” he said.
Markram also highlighted the key partnership with Tristan Stubbs, which helped SEC rebuild after a tricky phase, before Jansen’s late blitz put them in a commanding position.
What’s Next? SEC vs PR in Qualifier 2
With this win, SEC move into Qualifier 2, where they will face PR for a place in the SA20 final. Meanwhile, JSK’s playoff struggles continue, as they suffer their third straight knockout defeat in SA20 history.
The road to the final is not over yet, and Markram’s men will need another big performance against PR if they are to keep their dream of a hat-trick of titles alive. Can SEC create history, or will PR stop their march? Fans can expect another thrilling clash in Centurion on Thursday!
