SEC Cruise Past PR to Reach Third Consecutive SA20 Final
The Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC) are one step closer to completing their historic SA20 hat-trick after a dominant eight-wicket victory over Paarl Royals (PR) in Qualifier 2 at Centurion.
Needing 176 to win, SEC’s top order finally hit peak form, with Tony de Zorzi and Jordan Hermann scripting a commanding run chase. De Zorzi, playing in just his third match of the season, produced a sensational 78 off 49 balls, while Hermann anchored the innings with an unbeaten 69 off 48 balls, guiding SEC to victory with eight wickets and 11 balls to spare.
With this win, SEC storm into their third straight SA20 final, keeping their hopes alive for a historic hat-trick of championship titles.
De Zorzi and Hermann Lead SEC’s Clinical Chase
After SEC restricted PR to 175/4, the chase was all about timing and composure. De Zorzi, who was drafted in late as a replacement for the injured Patrick Kruger, grabbed his opportunity in style. He smashed 11 fours and 2 sixes, setting the tone for a 111-run partnership with Hermann that completely deflated PR’s hopes.
Grateful for the chance, De Zorzi expressed his excitement after the match:
"It's very, very cool. It hasn't set in yet. I am really grateful to Aiden (Markram) for giving me this opportunity. I am glad I could repay the faith."
Hermann played the perfect supporting role before finishing the game in style, striking four sixes in his 69-run unbeaten knock. Captain Aiden Markram was delighted with the performance, acknowledging how the team had finally hit form at the perfect time.
"Another good night. We are getting there, happy to restrict them. Good to see guys firing, all coming into place now."
Rubin Hermann and Pretorius Give PR a Strong Start
Earlier in the night, Rubin Hermann put on a masterclass with the bat, scoring a brilliant 81 off 53 balls. He was well supported by the tournament’s leading run-scorer, Lhuan-dre Pretorius (59 off 41 balls), as the duo added 99 runs for the second wicket.
Pretorius’ third fifty of the season and Andile Phehlukwayo’s quickfire 22 off 11 balls helped PR post a competitive total of 175/4. But with SEC’s top order firing, it was never going to be enough.
David Miller’s Disappointment as PR Exit SA20
Despite an impressive group-stage campaign, PR’s season ended in heartbreak after their fourth consecutive loss. Captain David Miller, though disappointed, praised his team’s fighting spirit.
"We lost the last four games, but I am really proud of the unit. We had some really outstanding performances and great team spirit. It’s sad to end this way, but all the best to SEC in the final."
Final Showdown: SEC Set for Title Clash
With this victory, SEC now advance to the SA20 2025 final, where they will face MI Cape Town (MICT). With momentum firmly on their side, Markram’s men will look to create history by winning their third consecutive SA20 title.
Will SEC complete the hat-trick, or will MICT stop them in their tracks? The SA20 final promises to be an electrifying contest!
