Simelane’s Five-Wicket Heroics Powers SA Emerging to Series-Levelling Win Over Bangladesh
Rajshahi, May 14, 2025 – In a thrilling display of resilience and raw talent, Andile Simelane produced a stunning five-wicket haul to script a memorable 10-run win for South Africa Emerging Men against Bangladesh Emerging in the second one-day match at the Shahid Kamruzzaman Stadium in Rajshahi. The result levels the three-match series 1-1, setting up an enticing decider this Friday at the same venue.
Simelane’s final figures of 5 for 56, including two wickets off the last two balls of the match, not only underlined his composure under pressure but also capped a remarkable comeback for the visitors, who at one point appeared to be heading toward a narrow defeat.
Andile Simelane’s Final Over Brilliance Defines the Match
With Bangladesh Emerging needing just over 40 runs from the final five overs and centurion Akbar Ali cruising at the crease on a magnificent 131 off 110 balls, the game seemed destined to go the hosts’ way. But Simelane had other plans.
Launching a counterattack with precision and nerve, Simelane took control of the death overs. He consistently hit hard lengths, varied his pace, and bowled with heart in sweltering conditions. The final two wickets came in dramatic fashion on the last two deliveries of the 50th over, leaving Bangladesh just 10 runs short of the target at 322 all out.
This performance from the Hollywoodbets Dolphins pacer didn’t just level the series it announced him as a future-ready fast bowler in South African cricket’s next-gen core.
Connor Esterhuizen and Dian Forrester Lead the Batting Charge
Earlier in the day, it was the South African batters who laid the foundation for the win. After being sent in to bat, the visitors overcame an early wobble to post an imposing 332/7 in 50 overs. Young batter Connor Esterhuizen, continuing his excellent form from the first ODI, hammered a fluent 91 off 68 balls, showcasing class and confidence against both pace and spin.
He was well supported by Andile Mokgakane, who struck a composed 55 off 63 balls, stabilizing the innings after two quick wickets. Their 137-run third-wicket stand turned the momentum in South Africa’s favour.
But it was Dian Forrester, the dynamic all-rounder from the Knights, who stole the show with the bat. Coming in at a crucial stage, Forrester blazed his way to an unbeaten 96 off just 59 balls, launching a late-innings assault that included seven fours and six sixes. His explosive strokeplay helped the tourists surge past the 330-run mark, which proved just enough in the end.
Bangladesh Emerging’s Brave Chase Falls Just Short
Bangladesh’s pursuit of 333 began with intent. Despite losing wickets in the early phase courtesy of Tshepo Ntuli’s double strike the middle order rallied. Jishan Alam’s 50 off 34 balls and valuable contributions from Ariful Islam (35) and Rizwan Chowdhury (37) kept the home team in the contest.
The standout, however, was Akbar Ali, who played one of the finest innings seen in an Emerging match in recent memory. His 131, laced with 14 boundaries and 2 sixes, was a masterclass in controlled aggression and match awareness. At 291/4, Bangladesh looked poised for a series-clinching win.
But the South African bowling unit refused to back down. Nqobani Mokoena (3/52) struck the crucial blow by dismissing Akbar just when the finish line was in sight. With wickets falling in the 46th, 47th, and 48th overs, the pressure returned to Bangladesh, and Simelane did the rest in the final over.
A Valuable Win Ahead of Decider and Four-Day Matches
This win marks an important statement from SA Emerging Men, not just in terms of leveling the series but in reaffirming their ability to close out tight games. The momentum now shifts in their favour as the teams gear up for the third and final one-day match on Friday, May 16, at the same Rajshahi venue.
Following the ODIs, the tour moves into its red-ball phase with two four-day matches scheduled in Chattogram and Dhaka. With players like George van Heerden, Dewan Marais, and Tiaan van Vuuren in the squad, South Africa will be eager to test their depth and endurance against a competitive Bangladesh side.
This tour has already provided invaluable learning opportunities for a host of rising talents from both nations. For South Africa, the emergence of clutch performers like Simelane and Forrester is especially encouraging in their long-term development pipeline.
