SA vs NZ: Proteas Announce Squad for Tri-Series ODIs

The South African cricket team is set to take on New Zealand (NZ) and Pakistan (PAK) in a highly anticipated tri-nation One-Day International (ODI) series, scheduled from February 8-14 in Lahore and Karachi. Head coach Rob Walter has unveiled the initial squad for the tournament, with ODI captain Temba Bavuma leading a group that includes six uncapped players.

With several senior players still engaged in the SA20 playoffs, additional squad members will be announced following the league’s eliminator clash between Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Joburg Super Kings. This strategy allows Walter and his team to assess available options while balancing commitments across different formats.

Bavuma to Lead SA in the Opening Clash Against NZ

The Proteas will kick off their campaign on February 10 against NZ at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium. With Bavuma at the helm, the squad features a mix of young talent and experienced campaigners. Among the notable selections are uncapped batters Matthew Breetzke (Dafabet Warriors) and Meeka-eel Prince (NWU Dragons), as well as fast bowlers Eathan Bosch (Hollywoodbets Dolphins) and Gideon Peters (NWU Dragons).

Spinner Senuran Muthusamy (Dafabet Warriors) and all-rounder Mihlali Mpongwana (WP) also make the cut, with Mpongwana earning his second ODI call-up after being part of the squad that faced India in 2023. Meanwhile, Gerald Coetzee’s recovery from a hamstring strain bolsters the fast-bowling unit.

SA’s Squad Set to Expand After SA20 Final

Walter has confirmed that players involved in the SA20 final will join the team on February 9, ahead of the second ODI against PAK on February 12 at the National Stadium in Karachi. Notably, Keshav Maharaj and Heinrich Klaasen will miss the opening match due to travel arrangements but are expected to feature in the remainder of the series.

Proteas Squad:
Temba Bavuma (Captain), Eathan Bosch*, Matthew Breetzke*, Junior Dala, Wiaan Mulder, Mihlali Mpongwana*, Senuran Muthusamy*, Gideon Peters*, Meeka-eel Prince*, Jason Smith and Kyle Verreynne  (*Uncapped)

In a significant setback for South Africa (SA) ahead of the much-anticipated tri-nation ODI series against Pakistan (PAK) and New Zealand (NZ), fast bowler Gerald Coetzee has been ruled out due to injury. The Proteas pacer experienced tightness in his groin during a training session at the Centre of Excellence in Pretoria, prompting immediate medical evaluation, Coetzee will not be considered for selection for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

The final squad for the tournament will be announced once the SA20 final concludes, ensuring a full-strength team is available for the crucial clashes.

Proteas’ Road to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025

With the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 on the horizon, this tri-series serves as a crucial platform for South Africa to fine-tune their preparations. Several key players Marco Jansen, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, and Rassie van der Dussen will depart for PAK on February 14, joining the national setup for the major ICC event.

Their arrival will provide the Proteas with an even stronger squad as they look to fine-tune their combinations and build momentum leading into the Champions Trophy.
