Southee Backs NZ to Shine at ICC Champions Trophy 2025
Can the Blackcaps Go All the Way?
With the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 just days away, NZ legend Tim Southee has shared his thoughts on the team’s preparations and their chances of clinching the title. Having announced his retirement at the end of 2024, Southee will be watching from the sidelines for the first time in years.
However, he remains confident that the Kiwis, led by Mitchell Santner, have the right blend of youth and experience to make a serious impact in PAK & UAE conditions.
A Strong Lead-Up to CT 2025
NZ head into the Champions Trophy with winning momentum, having clinched the Tri-Nation Series against PAK and SA.
With players finding form at the right time, NZ look well-prepared to challenge for the trophy.
Santner’s Leadership & Williamson’s Class
Southee heaped praise on Santner’s captaincy, highlighting his calm demeanor and all-round skills:
"Mitch has done a great job as captain. He’s calm under pressure, leads by example in batting, bowling, and fielding, and brings tactical awareness to the game."
Meanwhile, Williamson’s presence is crucial for NZ’s batting unit. Southee believes his ability to control the game makes a huge difference:
"Kane just looks in control all the time. He understands match situations, adjusts to conditions, and brings a sense of calmness to the dressing room."
The New Era of NZ Fast Bowling
With Southee and Trent Boult no longer leading the attack, the spotlight now falls on Will O’Rourke and Nathan Smith.
"It’s exciting to see these young quicks step up. ICC events are the perfect platform to showcase their talent."
Can NZ Win Their First CT Title Since 2000?
Southee remains optimistic about NZ’s chances at CT 2025:
"NZ have a strong history in ICC events. They’re always there or thereabouts. If they gain momentum, anything is possible."
With a balanced squad, a seasoned batting unit, and promising young quicks, NZ will be a team to watch in the tournament. Can they lift the trophy once again? Fans certainly hope so!
