The squads for the forthcoming One-Day International (ODI) series against Afghanistan and the subsequent white-ball trip against Ireland have been revealed by white-ball head coach Rob Walter. Both events will take place in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) later this month.
Both DP World Lions spinner Nqaba Peter and Hollywoodbets Dolphins all-rounder Jason Smith, who have both been capped in Twenty20 Internationals (T20I), have earned their first-ever ODI call-ups.
All-rounder Andile Simelane of the Dolphins, who was selected for both the ODI team against Afghanistan and the T20I team against Ireland, will be playing for the first time against the national team. The 21-year-old, who was considered a high-potential prospect, most recently played for South Africa A in the one-day series against Sri Lanka. He was a member of the SA Emerging tour to Zimbabwe in August.
After recovering from a right calf injury, Proteas seamer Lungi Ngidi was picked in all three teams.
Prior to traveling to Abu Dhabi for two Twenty20 matches on September 27 and 29, three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) against Ireland from October 2–7, and three T20Is against Afghanistan from September 18–22 at Sharjah Cricket Stadium, the Proteas will play Ireland. Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium will serve as the site of all five games.
"We have decided to give opportunities to some of the fringe players as well as those who have impressed in recent weeks and months," Walter stated in response to questions about the squad selection.
"Management has made this decision on purpose in order to expand the pool of players available for selection in the lead-up to the main ICC competitions in the following 18 months, with an eye toward the 50-over World Cup in 2027.
Without a doubt, trips like this one give us the exceptional chance to expose gamers to different environments throughout the world than they are accustomed to.
"I am especially excited to see how some of the more seasoned players step up, and I'll be closely monitoring who seizes this chance to establish themselves as regulars in the national lineup."
