Suyash Sharma Comeback Story: Injury, Recovery and IPL 2025 Return with RCB

Suyash Sharma: From Surgery to IPL Comeback with RCB's Relentless Support

There are stories in cricket that go beyond runs and wickets stories stitched with pain, patience, and perseverance. Suyash Sharma’s journey from being overlooked for years, enduring a career-threatening injury, and emerging as a key figure in Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) 2025 campaign is one such tale.

Battling the Body: Surgery, Setbacks, and Support

Suyash Sharma's road back to the IPL began not on a training pitch but in a hospital. Diagnosed with three hernias, he underwent major surgery in London a phase that could have derailed many careers. Yet, it became a turning point for him, not least because of the unconditional backing from RCB. The franchise flew him to London, where he met team physio James Pipe. What followed was not just medical care but emotional healing.

"Pipey and his family treated me like one of their own. That kind of environment helped more than I can explain," Suyash recalled.

He wasn’t expected to feature early in the season. Doctors had pencilled in a later return, but Suyash defied timelines, backed by sheer will and the franchise’s trust. After two years of silently enduring pain, playing through discomfort, he finally feels free.

Overlooked, but Never Broken

Before the surgery and spotlight, Suyash's cricketing life was defined by near-misses. For six to seven years, he cycled through age-group trials without ever making the cut. Even after promising performances at the Under-25 level, the IPL seemed distant. His parents, always supportive, often wondered when his turn would come.

"My dad never doubted me. Even when I came back home dejected from trials, he reminded me that hard work always pays off," he said.

It finally did. At a KKR practice match, his deadly googlies made heads turn. Eight wickets out of ten enough for the selectors to take notice. The IPL call-up came when his father was in the hospital. "He cried when he heard. It was his dream too," Suyash shared.

The Debut: A Dream and a Roar

Suyash’s IPL debut came full circle against RCB, the team he now proudly represents. He had never even attended a live match before, let alone played in front of a packed stadium.

"The pressure was insane. I remember walking out and my mind went blank. I just tried to remember what I’d done in practice. One over later, I settled in. The crowd, the noise I took it all in," he said.

At 19, he had achieved what he only expected to experience at 24 or 25. The learning curve was steep, but his self-belief never wavered.

Visualization as Recovery

Recovery was not just physical. During his three months of bed rest, Suyash turned inward. With no access to practice, he resorted to mental repetitions. He visualized his bowling, rehearsed scenarios, and even focused on his run-up the heartbeat of his bowling action.

"When I got back on the field, it didn't feel alien. I had already lived those moments in my head countless times. The brain was match-fit before the body," he explained.

Wrist spin, as he puts it, is an art that demands rhythm. And that rhythm can dissolve quickly if not nurtured. Visualization became his lifeline.

Born to Bowl: An Action That Found Him

Suyash's bowling journey began casually in a park. Initially a batter, he discovered spin bowling almost accidentally. But once it clicked, there was no looking back. His unique action developed naturally, and even today, he relies on instinct as much as technique.

"I’ve fine-tuned some parts, but my action is me. It wasn’t taught. It just came," he said.

Mentorship and the Malo Factor

Much credit for Suyash's evolution goes to Malolan Rangarajan, RCB’s player identification manager and spin bowling coach. Post-auction, Malo helped him understand the nuances—from his run-up to release angles. Those sessions planted seeds that continued to grow, even during recovery.

"Malo made me look at myself differently. He simplified complex things. That’s what I held onto during the downtime," said Suyash.

A Father’s Memory, A Son’s Mission

The emotional depth of Suyash’s journey is amplified by personal loss. Just as his cricketing journey was gaining traction, his father lost his battle with cancer.

"He was in the hospital when I got my IPL call. I wish he could’ve seen me play," Suyash shared. Yet, his family’s unwavering belief fuels him. His mother remains his pillar, his teacher, and his guide.

One Dream: The Trophy

With every match, Suyash Sharma carries layers of pain, promise, and potential. He isn’t chasing personal milestones this season.

"There’s only one goal: to lift the cup. That’s it," he stated with quiet determination.

For RCB, he is not just a cricketer. He is a symbol of resilience, a spinner who refused to be spun out by injury or misfortune. With his craft honed in silence and his mind trained through adversity, Suyash Sharma is here not just to play but to leave a mark.
