Shoaib Akhtar Backs SW for ILT20 Glory After Stunning Comeback

With ILT20 2025 heading towards its much-awaited finale, legendary fast bowler and DP World ILT20 ambassador Shoaib Akhtar has thrown his support behind Sharjah Warriorz (SW) to claim the coveted title. SW’s late surge in the tournament, culminating in an eight-wicket win against MIE, has impressed Akhtar, who believes the team has peaked at the perfect time.

SW’s Remarkable Comeback in ILT20

Ahead of the ILT20 Eliminator clash against MIE, Akhtar spoke about SW’s transformation from slow starters to serious title contenders.

“I think my heart goes for SW because they started off late but gained momentum at the right time. It’s great to see them in this position,” said Akhtar.

While he remained neutral in his commentary role, he admitted that seeing SW go all the way would be special.

“While I don’t want to seem biased, it would be great to see SW claim the title,” he added.

SW’s Road to the Playoffs

SW’s journey to the playoffs was nothing short of spectacular. A string of commanding performances, including their thrilling win against defending champions MIE, ensured their qualification. Now, they face MIE once again in the Eliminator, with the winner set to battle DV for a spot in the ILT20 Final.

ILT20’s Standout Performers Impress Akhtar

Akhtar also reflected on the high-quality performances in ILT20 2025, highlighting some remarkable individual displays.

Among the batting stars, Alex Hales (DV) has been a standout performer, recently surpassing Shoaib Malik to become the third-highest run-scorer in T20 history with 13,511 runs. Hales now trails only Chris Gayle (14,562) and Kieron Pollard (13,537).

The tournament also witnessed record-breaking feats, including MIE’s Tom Banton scoring a historic double century and DC’s Shai Hope leading the run charts with 484 runs.

“ILT20 is growing bigger every year. The numbers speak for themselves, from TRPs to quality performances,” said Akhtar.

The Rise of Bowling Talent in ILT20

Akhtar, widely regarded as one of the fastest bowlers in cricket history, also praised the bowlers who have shined in ILT20 2025.

The leading wicket-taker of the tournament, Fazalhaq Farooqi (MIE), has bagged 20 wickets, making him one of Afghanistan’s most exciting prospects.

“Farooqi is a great find for Afghanistan. He’s learning fast and should aim for long-term success with his national team,” said Akhtar.

Among other top performers:

  • Jason Holder (ADKR) - 17 wickets
  • Alzarri Joseph (MIE) & Blessing Muzarabani (GG) - 16 wickets each
  • Aayan Afzal Khan (GG) - 10 wickets

Akhtar also had special praise for Pakistan’s Khuzaima Bin Tanvir (DV), who has impressed with his pace and accuracy.

“Khuzaima has shown great promise. He has a bright future,” he said.

Akhtar’s Advice for Young Pacers

As someone who bowled over 23,000 balls in his career, including 10,000 bouncers, Akhtar had some words of wisdom for young pacers looking to make a mark.

“Fast bowlers need to be aggressive. Mix up your deliveries, use bouncers wisely, and ensure the batters stay on the backfoot. Accuracy and good length are key to taking wickets,” he advised.

SW’s Big Test Against MIE in the Eliminator

As SW take on MIE in a high-stakes Eliminator, all eyes will be on whether Akhtar’s prediction comes true. If SW can carry their momentum forward, they could take a step closer to their first-ever ILT20 title.

The question remains—will SW rise to the occasion, or will MIE stage a comeback to keep their title hopes alive? The ILT20 drama is far from over!
