Rodrigues eyes WPL glory, hails the league’s impact on women’s cricket
With WPL 2025 just around the corner, Delhi Capitals are leaving no stone unturned in their preparations, aiming to finally clinch the coveted title after finishing as runners-up in the last two editions. Star batter Jemimah Rodrigues, currently in Pune for the pre-season camp, exudes confidence as she gears up for the tournament, promising that the team will “keep playing to win.”
Focused on the Ultimate Goal
Reflecting on DC’s consistency in the first two WPL seasons, Rodrigues acknowledged the team’s efforts and remained hopeful of crossing the final hurdle.
“We have been very good and consistent in the last two seasons as a team. Of course, there's this one final, which I'm sure we will cross and get our hands on the trophy. We have been doing the right things, putting in all our hard work, and will keep playing to win.”
Her personal training regime is all about preparing for real match situations. Whether it’s playing aggressively, building an innings, or working on power-hitting, she is leaving nothing to chance.
“I use heavy balls in training, which help me get my bat swing faster and give me more power.”
The WPL Effect on Women's Cricket
With 381 runs in 18 WPL matches at an impressive strike rate of 143.82, Rodrigues believes the WPL has revolutionized women’s cricket in India.
“Playing among the best in the WPL brings out the best in every player. The more competitive games we play, the more we understand pressure situations and learn how to handle them. Even domestic cricket has gone up in standard.”
She also highlighted the surge in fan following for women’s cricket, crediting the WPL for making players household names.
“Because of WPL, fans have started following the players even more. The craze for women’s cricket in India has skyrocketed.”
Bond with Meg Lanning
Rodrigues shares a special camaraderie with Delhi Capitals’ captain Meg Lanning, whom she once considered intimidating.
“Before WPL, I saw her in the World Cup semis against us and thought she was super competitive and aggressive. But when I met her, I realized how down-to-earth and friendly she is. She might not always express it, but her on-field mindset is pure aggression and leadership.”
Road to WPL 2025
Delhi Capitals will kick off their WPL 2025 campaign against Mumbai Indians on February 15 in Vadodara. With their sights set on the title, Jemimah and her team are prepared to give it their all and finally turn their dream into reality.
