UP Warriorz Ready to Dominate WPL 2025 Under Deepti Sharma

Strong Spin Attack & Explosive Batting Key to Success

Lucknow, February 15, 2025 – The UP Warriorz are all set to kick off their WPL 2025 campaign with a renewed focus and a fresh leader at the helm. As the team prepares for Season 3 of the Women’s Premier League, the squad is brimming with talent and determination to make an impact. Under the captaincy of Deepti Sharma, the Warriorz will take on Gujarat Giants in their opening match on February 16 in Vadodara, before facing Delhi Capitals on February 19.

This season is particularly special for the Capri Sports-owned franchise, as they will get the opportunity to play in front of their home fans in Lucknow for the first time. The team will host three matches at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in March, adding to the excitement of the tournament.

A Deadly Bowling Line-up Led by Spin Stars

The UPW boast one of the strongest bowling units in the tournament, particularly in the spin department. Skipper Deepti Sharma, who is India’s highest wicket-taker in women’s T20Is, leads a fierce spin attack that includes Sophie Ecclestone, the highest wicket-taker in WPL history with 27 wickets across two seasons.

They are backed by Alana King, Chamari Athapaththu, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, and Gouher Sultana, creating a formidable bowling arsenal that will be a major threat to opposition batters.

The pace attack also looks promising, with Anjali Sarvani and Saima Thakor leading the charge. Thakor, in particular, has been growing from strength to strength, making her a key figure in the squad. The addition of Kranti Goud, who played a crucial role in Madhya Pradesh’s domestic ODI title win, further bolsters the fast-bowling unit.

Powerful Batting Unit Ready to Fire

The UPW batting lineup is as strong as its bowling. The team will rely on the aggressive stroke play of Chamari Athapaththu, Tahlia McGrath, and Grace Harris, all of whom have a proven track record in the T20 format.

Captain Deepti Sharma will also play a pivotal role with the bat, looking to replicate her MVP-winning performance from WPL 2024, where she struck three half-centuries with a strike rate of 150.

Young Indian batters like Kiran Navgire, Shweta Sehrawat, and Vrinda Dinesh have shown immense promise in the domestic circuit and will aim to make their mark in WPL 2025.

Areas to Improve: Fielding & Injury Management

Despite their strengths, the UPW will need to improve their fielding – an area where they struggled last season. The coaching staff, led by Jon Lewis, will be keen to ensure that the team sharpens its catching and ground fielding, as small mistakes in the field can change the course of a match.

Additionally, injury management will be crucial. With a packed schedule, keeping key players fit throughout the tournament will be essential for a successful campaign.

What to Expect from UPW in WPL 2025

With a strong squad, a new captain, and a balanced combination of youth and experience, the UP Warriorz have all the ingredients for a successful WPL 2025. If they can capitalize on their spin dominance, maintain consistency in batting, and improve their fielding, they will be strong contenders for the WPL title this season.

The journey begins on February 16 against GG – will the Warriorz rise to the challenge?
